UW Duo Recital to Feature Works of French Composer for Violin and Piano April 10

John Fadial and Chi-Chen Wu with their musical instrumentsUniversity of Wyoming Department of Music faculty members John Fadial and Chi-Chen Wu will perform a violin and piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 10, in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts recital hall. The concert is free and open to the public.

Fadial, a professor, and Wu, an associate professor, will perform the complete works for violin and piano by French composer Gabriel Fauré. The recital will be performed exclusively on period instruments, including the UW Department of Music’s historic Broadwood piano from 1858 -- newly restored by the department’s Tim Wirth -- and a replica of Henri Vieuxtemps’ famous Guarneri violin, strung with authentic gut strings.

The audience will have the opportunity to hear Fadial and Wu before they make the historic first complete recording of these works on period instruments at Cornell University in May.

The UW recital’s program will feature music from Fauré’s life, culminating in his final violin sonata, which would usher in the modernism of his students, including Nadia Boulanger and Maurice Ravel.

When he was 11, Fadial performed as a soloist for President Gerald Ford. He since has sustained a multifaceted international career as a chamber musician, concertmaster, soloist and pedagogue, performing in multiple styles, from the Baroque to contemporary periods, and earning critical acclaim.

Fadial was a Grammy Award semifinalist for “Where Does Love Go: Chamber Music of Mark Engebretsen.” He collaborates regularly with leading musicians, including Gerard Schwarz, Jennifer Higdon and Libby Larsen.

As a musician active in performing, recording, teaching and research, Wu is equally at home in the worlds of contemporary and classical music as well as historical performance practice. She has appeared as a recitalist, chamber musician and concerto soloist in the United States, Canada, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Luxembourg, Japan, Taiwan, China and Thailand. Wu has performed with some of the world’s leading musicians.

She also has performed at numerous festivals, and her live performances have been broadcast on National Public Radio’s Simply Grand Concert Series and “From The Top.” Her newest album, “Robert Schumann: Carnaval and Fantasie,” won a silver medal in the Global Music Awards.
