UW Enhanced Oil Recovery Insights Talk Sept. 12

Geologist Scott Ellingson and geophysicist John Frederick will present new interpretations of the Alpha Field based on geological mapping and a 3D seismic survey Tuesday, Sept. 12, in Casper and virtually via Webex.

The talk is part of the University of Wyoming Enhanced Oil Recovery Institute’s (EORI) Enhanced Oil Recovery Insights series, focused on minimizing stranded oil in Wyoming reservoirs.

The talk will take place at True River Cross Commons, located at 465 N. Poplar St., from 7-8:30 a.m. Coffee and breakfast snacks will be provided. The event is free, but registration is required by going online to www.eoriwyoming.org/events/eori-events/eor-insights-2.

Ellingson and Frederick will discuss analysis of a 3D seismic survey over the Alpha Field in the Minnelusa Formation and how these new data affected geological mapping of the field. The purpose of the study was to develop a better understanding of the reservoir boundaries and to determine if there were additional locations worth drilling. This work shows that it is now possible to predict reservoir thickness more accurately for location of proved undeveloped (PUD) reserves -- and to minimize the chances of drilling a dry hole.

Ellingson, founder of Zion Energy LLC, is a highly experienced geologist who has worked on conventional assets for the past 15 years throughout the Rocky Mountain region. He currently specializes in optimizing waterfloods, identifying behind-pipe potential and prospecting for potential PUD locations.

Frederick, founder of Red Leaf Energy, is known for his expertise in working with Permian Minnelusa eolian sandstone reservoirs in Wyoming. He has developed methodologies to optimize seismic acquisition techniques and seismic data processing parameters, and he has integrated geological and geophysical interpretive and visualization techniques to increase successful efforts in locating and developing reserves.
