For 66 rising juniors, it was never too early to be thinking about their futures, especially if it leads to a secondary education at the University of Wyoming.
A diverse group of students had the opportunity to experience college life during the 39th annual Summer High School Institute (HSI) last month on the UW campus.
“We were so excited to bring a total of 66 rising high school juniors to the UW campus for another exhilarating HSI experience this summer,” says Li Teng, HSI director and UW Honors College director of student success. “Students were able to participate in their education and learned though hands-on experiences; they met new friends from all over the state of Wyoming; they built important life skills; and they participated in a variety of field trips and community engagement events.”
During the recent program, each student was enrolled in two college-level courses of their choice: a physical and natural world class, and a human culture class. As part of their classes, students participated in various field trips that allowed them to apply conceptual knowledge to actual problems or situations.
UW faculty members taught problem-centered classes during HSI, ranging from measurement science to world of languages to modern technology and criminal justice. Classes focused on learning rather than on homework, tests and grades.
The three-week experience also included extracurricular activities, including guest speakers, workshops, films, performances, athletic activities, visits to museums, enrichment excursions, a talent show and community service projects.
The students were selected from high schools across Wyoming. UW offers them an opportunity to achieve intellectual and personal growth, cultivate their leadership capabilities and measure their capacities and interests.
Each year, high school administrators, counselors and teachers guide students through the application process. Selections are based on an application letter, a personal statement, a letter of recommendation, academic performance and extracurricular activity involvement.
Begun in 1985, HSI is sponsored by UW, with special funding from the Wyoming State Legislature.
“HSI expresses its gratitude to HSI alumni and friends for their generous support over the years,” Teng says. “This year, a special acknowledgement is extended to the Stark family in Laramie for their generous donation that has enriched the program, enabling additional students to benefit from this invaluable experience.”
HSI’s 40th anniversary will be celebrated next July 7-27.
