On this May 27-June 7 adventure, travelers will experience vast, untouched landscapes and learn about nomadic culture in Mongolia with a highly regarded researcher who has worked in the region for more than 15 years.
“I have long been fascinated by the beauty of the landscapes, the richness of history and culture, and the kindness of the people of Mongolia,” says Koprowski, who has helped UW set up international agreements with the National University of Mongolia and the Mongolian Academy of Sciences. “I look forward to introducing UW community members to this amazing place.”
Participants will explore museums; visit monasteries; view rare wildlife; hike high-altitude meadows; see dinosaur fossils and archaeological sites; meet nomadic herding families; and enjoy traditional music and dance performances.
The tour begins and ends in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, with stops in Khustain Nuruu National Park; the ancient city of Karakhorum; Erdenezuu Monastery; Ongiin Khiid Monastery; the Gobi Desert; Gobi Gurvansaikhan National Park; the Yolyn Am Mountains; and the Tugrigiin Shiree Flaming Cliffs.
The expedition includes accommodations in hotels and ger camps; most meals; travel from Ulaanbaatar to remote sites in four-wheel-drive vehicles with English-speaking guides; entrance fees to sites; and expert guidance and insights from Koprowski.
The tour is open to no more than 15 UW friends, alumni and community members. The cost is $3,950 per person (costs increase about $250 per person should all 15 spots not fill). Airfare to Ulaanbaatar is not included. Sleeping accommodations are double rooms, and the supplement for single occupancy is $500 per person.
The Haub School gives students the skills and tools they need to build durable, inclusive solutions to the most pressing environmental and natural resource challenges, including through international courses. Any proceeds from the tour will support field and international learning experiences for UW students.
For more information, email Koprowski at jkoprows@uwyo.edu. To reserve a spot on this adventure, email UW’s Global Engagement Office at global@uwyo.edu no later than Dec. 1.
