UW’s EORI Publishes Discussion on Muddy Formation Geology

A senior petroleum geologist with the University of Wyoming’s Enhanced Oil Recovery Institute (EORI) recently discussed some new geologic interpretations that may have an impact on improving oil production from the Muddy Formation in the Powder River Basin.

Stephen Whitaker presented on “New Thoughts on the Muddy at Kitty Field: Ramifications for Regional Interpretations” as part of EORI’s “Enhanced Oil Recovery Insights” series, focused on minimizing stranded oil in Wyoming reservoirs.

Whitaker approached the discussion from three questions: the development of the Muddy Formation; the relationship between the Permian Pine/Ervay Salt and deposition of the Cretaceous Muddy Formation; and how the dissolution of underlying salt affects correlations in the Muddy at Kitty Field and elsewhere.
