UW’s EORI Publishes Presentation on Further Alpha Field Potential

A petroleum geologist and consulting geophysicist presented new interpretations of the Alpha Field during a recent event hosted by the University of Wyoming’s Enhanced Oil Recovery Institute (EORI).

Scott Ellingson and John Frederick gave the presentation as part of EORI’s “Enhanced Oil Recovery Insights” series, which focuses on minimizing stranded oil in Wyoming reservoirs. They discussed analysis of a 3D seismic survey over the Alpha Field in the Minnelusa Formation and how these new data affected geological mapping of the field.

The purpose of the study was to develop a better understanding of the reservoir boundaries and to determine if there were additional locations worth drilling. This work shows that it is now possible to predict reservoir thickness more accurately for location of proved undeveloped reserves -- in fact, the new data indicate two proved undeveloped locations. Furthermore, the work by Ellingson and Frederick enabled them to predict rates of deliverability for these two new potential drill sites.

EORI’s mission and focus are to facilitate meaningful, measurable and economically viable solutions to increase recoverable reserves and production of oil and natural gas in Wyoming that otherwise may not be realized.
