UW Academic Writing Fellows Program Reaches Midpoint of Fourth Year

The University of Wyoming Cross-Disciplinary Academic Writing Fellows program recently reached the midpoint of its fourth year.

The program, which admits nine to 12 scholars each year, promotes greater research and publication productivity through mentoring, retreats, writing groups and community-building.

Fellows in the 2023-24 program are Jordan Glass (Department of Zoology and Physiology), Alexandra Kelly (History, Anthropology), Zoe Kriegel (Communication Disorders), Sarah Lass (Theatre and Dance), Maddie Lewis (Geology and Geophysics), Elizabeth Minton (Management and Marketing), Jon Prather (Life Sciences Program, Zoology and Physiology), Ram Shukla (Zoology and Physiology), Jennifer Tabler (Criminal Justice and Sociology), Marie-Agnès Tellier (Mathematics and Statistics) and Courtney Titus (Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion).

In its first three years, 30 members of UW’s scholarly community participated in the program. Those Fellows -- coming from every college on campus -- produced 149 academic texts during their time in the program, including articles, grant proposals, chapters for edited collections, dissertations and book proposals or manuscripts. Through the first half of year four, the 2023-24 Fellows have already submitted over 20 projects.

“I have loved having a writing group to meet with. The writing groups and retreats create a sense of accountability and community,” says Glass, a fourth-year Fellow. “The program also has helped me gain insight about writing and finding fulfillment in it, and it also has strengthened my self-confidence as a writer.”

“I have learned so much from the interdisciplinary community that has been fostered here,” Titus says. “It is incredibly motivating to be around folks who have different academic expertise but shared motivations around writing and contributions to society.”

This program is part of UW Communication across the Curriculum (CxC), directed by Rick Fisher. Housed within the Learning Resource Network and funded by the Office of the Provost, CxC supports UW faculty members and students in enhancing their written, oral and digital communication. It provides resources and guidance for faculty in teaching writing and seeks to promote an engaged culture of academic communication across campus.
