Artist Derli Romero to Give Free Talk at UW April 2

Mexican artist Derli Romero will give a free talk titled “Rostros migrantes: Humanizing Migrants’ Voices through Art and Narrative” with Kimberle López Tuesday, April 2, at 6:30 p.m. in Room 111 of the University of Wyoming’s Visual Arts Building.

Following the talk, there will be a catered reception and art viewing.

López is an associate professor of Latin American literature in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of New Mexico. She holds a Ph.D. in Hispanic languages and literatures from the University of California-Berkeley, and she is the author of “Latin American Novels of the Conquest: Reinventing the New World.”

In the presentation, Romero will describe his motivation and the process that resulted in his artistic work “Rostros migrantes.”

His project encompasses the testimonies of migrants from different countries passing through Mexico. Using a lithographic technique, he printed their stories on silhouettes made from the immigrants’ clothing after exchanging these for new clothing.

“Rostros migrantes” creates connections between art and social justice. The underlying theory of this project is that human identity is inscribed on people’s profiles. The micronarratives inscribed on the silhouettes express the suffering and the small joys migrants find along the way.

This project also explores the humanity of migrants in ways that are often neglected by mass media representations.

The event is hosted by the Latin American and Caribbean cohort of UW’s Center for Global Studies. It is sponsored by the Department of Visual Arts; the Milward L. Simpson Fund; the School of Politics, Public Affairs and International Studies; the Center for Global Studies; and the Department of Modern and Classical Languages.
