The University of Wyoming Department of Music will host guest pianist Lúcia Barrenechea Friday, April 26.

Barrenechea’s concert, “Piano Music of Latin America,” will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts recital hall. The concert is free and open to the public.

A native of Brazil, Barrenechea teaches at the Universidade Federal do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO), where she also supervises research and advising activities for the graduate program in music. She has served as a piano and chamber music teacher in prestigious music festivals in Brazil, including Villa-Lobos Festival in Rio de Janeiro and the International Summer Festival in Brasilia.

As a soloist, Barrenechea has performed with several Brazilian orchestras. Her first solo album, “Saracoteio - Piano Brasileiro,” features works of Brazilian composers.

Recognized as a notable chamber pianist, Barrenechea has performed with many well-known musicians in Brazil and abroad, and she has recorded a wide range of chamber music repertoire. In 2013 and 2017, she partnered with cellist Hugo Pilger on the project “Presence of Villa-Lobos in Brazilian Music for Cello and Piano.”

Barrenechea and her husband, flutist Sergio Barrenechea, have performed as Duo Barrenechea since 1989. Their first commercial CD, “Moments in Paris,” was released in 2008. They recorded “The Flute Music of Francisco Mignone” in 2011 and “Brasileirissimo: Encounters” in 2015.
