UW Planetarium Closed Due to Technical Equipment Issues

Programs scheduled this weekend and going forward at the Harry C. Vaughan Planetarium have been canceled due to technical issues with equipment.

“Unfortunately, our used replacement projector installed following the August 2022 flooding of the planetarium has encountered technical issues and we have to cancel our shows for the foreseeable future,” says Max Gilbraith, the planetarium’s coordinator. “We will continue to attempt to resolve the issue in hopes we can reopen before the end of July. We do, however, close again for the first half of August for our renovation. For now, all ticket sales are suspended, and we will begin issuing refunds for sold tickets.”

In fall 2023, the planetarium began the procurement process to replace its projectors with a brand-new system. The successful search was completed in May, Gilbraith says.

“We are fortunate to have already been scheduled for installation of all new equipment in the first half of August,” he says. “Full technical details of our new planetarium system will be released shortly, but we are incredibly excited and fortunate to have received top-tier funding for a cutting-edge system that will take us through the next decade.”
