The fall issue of UWyo Magazine, the University of Wyoming’s flagship publication,
shares the stories of more than 40 university changemakers -- alumni, faculty members
and students who give of their time and talent in Wyoming and around the world.
“As the stories in this issue of UWyo Magazine show, degrees from UW provide a platform for our graduates to fulfill their personal ambitions -- and to make the world a better place,” says UW President Ed Seidel. “Whether it’s starting a company, advocating for your local community, advancing innovation or helping people overseas, UW graduates are making a difference in Wyoming and across the world.”
This special issue includes a feature on UW programs making a difference in the state, such as the Wyoming Rural Teacher Corps and the Wyoming Center on Aging, as well as a feature highlighting impactful research, including cleft palate repair, conservation, crop fungicide treatments and proteins with the potential to save human lives. Readers also will meet alumni and student leaders, such as Johnna Arthur, who wants to build housing for elders on the Wind River Indian Reservation, and medical student Rafael Homer, who works to improve rural health care.
“I want to be able to leverage my medical education and my future status as a physician to create change and, hopefully, to improve the lives of folks in Wyoming and other rural areas,” says Homer, who is featured on this issue’s magazine cover. “It doesn’t really feel like extra work -- it’s more of a calling.”
That sentiment is echoed by fellow alumna Lindsey Amerine, who serves as chief pharmacy officer for Cleveland Clinic.
“UW instilled in me that commitment to service and giving back,” she says. “I think the more active you are, the more impact you can have.”
