UW Wind Symphony and Percussion Ensemble to Present ‘Chamber Music Magic’ Oct. 23

The University of Wyoming Wind Symphony, conducted by Matthew Schlomer, and UW Percussion Ensemble, conducted by Andy Wheelock, present “Chamber Music Magic” at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall.

Tickets are $12 for the public, $6 for senior citizens and $9 for students. A nominal processing fee will be charged for each ticket. To purchase tickets, visit the Performing Arts box office, call (307) 766-6666 or go online at www.tix.com/ticket-sales/uwyo/6984.

The concert will include performances by four chamber ensembles.

The Marimba Quartet -- featuring Trystan Campbell, Brent Church, Carson Rabou and Kai Wolz -- will open the concert with “Watercolor Sun” by Ivan Trevino.

The Flute Duet -- featuring Kathryn Bolinger and Emilee Ewing -- will perform “Three Duets for Two Flutes,” Op. 10 No. 3 by Friedrich Kuhlau.

The Reed Quintet -- featuring Maggie Estagin, bassoon; Jackson Fouras, oboe; Ryan Larsen, alto saxophone; Chase Maddox, bass clarinet; and Whitney Zigweid, clarinet -- will perform “Circusmusiek” by Ton ter Doest.

Closing out the concert is the Brass Ensemble -- featuring Steven Cozzuli, Tim Hosler, Jordan Swayze, Jack Tinnell and Steven Schneider, trumpets; Camren Ehrlich, Natalie James, Keaton Phipps and Corvin Stonecipher, horns; Logan Dominguez and Dalten Leach, trombones; Elijah Dugal, bass trombone; James Handy, euphonium; Nia Garner, tuba; and Brent Church and Ethan Walsh; percussion.

The ensemble will perform “A Western Fanfare” by Eric Ewazen; “O magnum mysterium” by Morton Lauridsen; and “Overture for a New Day” by Andrew Wolfe.

Schlomer is an international artist whose diverse background as a saxophonist, composer, arranger, dancer, actor and award-winning visual artist informs his unique approach to performance and concert programming. He avidly pursues diverse artistic collaborations. He also is an advocate of new music.

Formerly conductor at the renowned Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, Schlomer is an active guest conductor and a passionate educator who presents his innovative pedagogy to national and international audiences.

Wheelock is an active jazz drummer and percussionist, as well as director of jazz studies and percussion area coordinator at UW. He directs the Wyoming Jazz Ensemble, the UW Percussion Ensemble, the UW Samba Bateria and jazz combos. He also teaches percussion and jazz lessons.

Wheelock received his doctorate and master’s degree in jazz studies from the University of Illinois. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from Central Michigan University.
