UW’s Doering Named President’s Distinguished Scholar

Bree Doering, an assistant professor in the University of Wyoming’s Department of Anthropology, has been selected as the first President’s Distinguished Scholar.

Doering is a highly accomplished scholar in the fields of anthropology and archaeology. She is published in several top-tier journals, including the Journal of Field Archaeology, PaleoAmerica, Current Anthropology and American Antiquity.

Doering also is the recipient of a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER grant for her proposal, “Reconstructing Subsistence, Diet Breadth, and Paleoclimate in Interior Alaska during Social and Climatic Transitions.” These types of NSF grants are rarely awarded to anthropologists in the field of archaeology, and it is the largest in the history of the Department of Anthropology.

Doering not only is a highly accomplished academic and researcher, but she also is an inspiring teacher. She recently was selected for UW’s Promoting Intellectual Excellence Award and is mentoring eight graduate students.

“It was clear from the nomination materials that Bree is one of UW’s outstanding scholars,” UW President Ed Seidel says. “The achievements and promise of faculty like her are what inspired me to start this program. I’m really proud that Bree is the first President’s Distinguished Scholar; she is exemplary of the title and intention of the award.”

The President’s Distinguished Scholars Program seeks to recognize outstanding scholarship among faculty in all academic disciplines, with a focus on early-career faculty who show exceptional promise toward excellence in scholarship. To learn more about the program, visit the President’s Distinguished Scholars webpage.

Doering will be recognized as a President’s Distinguished Scholar for the next three years and will receive a monetary award to support her continued academic excellence.
