U.S. Ambassador to Tunisia Visits UW Campus

Joey Hood, U.S. ambassador to Tunisia, recently visited the University of Wyoming to advance a long-standing partnership between the state of Wyoming and Tunisia.

The partnership was established through the Republic of Tunisia and the Wyoming National Guard. In its 20th year, it is now expanding beyond security cooperation to include a strong educational partnership between UW and Tunisian universities and research institutions.

During his Jan. 31 visit, the ambassador met with UW leaders, faculty and students to explore potential collaborations in business, energy, agriculture and health sciences.

Hood’s discussions with UW faculty and college deans emphasized Tunisia’s geostrategic position and shared challenges in water, energy and rural health. Research collaboration on cultural heritage and tourism, water conservation policy, sustainable agricultural production, and health sciences and disease prevention could prove mutually beneficial.

The ambassador says he also was pleased to meet with Tunisian students; researchers studying and conducting research at UW; and the broader university student population at a well-attended lunch-and-learn event.

Hood’s visit underscores UW’s commitment to creating global opportunities for Wyoming students and residents while strengthening U.S.-Tunisia relations, says UW Vice Provost Isadora Helfgott.
