University of Wyoming Extension will host the Central Wyoming Tree Care Workshop Saturday, April 5. The conference is designed for anyone who wants to learn more about trees and their care.

The event begins at 8:30 a.m. and concludes at 4 p.m. It will take place at the Agricultural Resource and Learning Center in Casper, located at 2011 Fairgrounds Rd.

Certified arborists are eligible to earn International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) continuing education units by attending the event.

Speakers include ISA Master Arborist Bill Scott Jr. He will discuss how roots, soil and microorganisms can influence tree health. UW Extension plant pathologist Jean Williams-Woodward will address how to identify and manage diseases, pests and other problems that afflict Wyoming tree species. Scott Skogerboe, of the Fort Collins, Colo., Wholesale Nursery, will discuss the history of the High Plains Arboretum outside Cheyenne and how the plants grown there have impacted tree diversity and availability in Wyoming. Chrissy Land, western Nebraska community forestry specialist with the Nebraska Forest Service, will discuss pruning trees and shrubs.

“The four speakers will share extensive knowledge with the attendees, who can use this information to improve their tree care practices and, in turn, improve the trees on their property,” says Donna Hoffman, UW Extension master gardener coordinator. “This also will benefit the municipal tree canopy or Casper Mountain forests.”

Early bird registration, which is open through Monday, March 31, costs $40. Registration after March 31 will cost $60. Participants are asked to register in person or send a check to the Agricultural Resource and Learning Center, 2011 Fairgrounds Rd., Casper, WY 82604. Checks should be made to UW Extension of Natrona County.

A catered lunch will be provided for registered participants. On-site registration will open at 7:30 a.m. if space is still available.

Members of the Wyoming State Forestry Division, the Natrona County Conservation District and the City of Casper Parks Division regularly partner with Hoffman to plan educational events. The organizations helped organize the Central Wyoming Tree Care Workshop.
