UW, Other Cities to Host Alan K. Simpson Memorial Events

The public celebration of the life of former U.S. Sen. Alan K. Simpson will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 29, at the University of Wyoming’s Arena-Auditorium.

Simpson, one of the most accomplished and influential alumni in UW history -- and an unwavering friend and supporter of his alma mater -- died Friday, March 14, in Cody.

The March 29 celebration of life, hosted by the Simpson family, also will be simulcast on TV and streamed online by Wyoming PBS. It is one of three memorial observances planned later this month.

“The family is excited to welcome the many friends and community members who wish to commemorate Dad’s life with us at this celebration of life,” says Colin Simpson, Al and Ann Simpson’s son. “This venue allows enough room for everyone who wishes to join us in remembering our dad, who touched so many people in different ways. His passion for the people of Wyoming and beyond is apparent in the outpouring of love and support we have received. We are very grateful for the university’s friendship in making this possible.”

“The university is honored to provide the venue for the Simpson family’s public celebration of the life of our beloved alumnus, supporter and statesman,” UW President Ed Seidel says. “So many people associated with UW have cherished memories of their interactions with Sen. Simpson, and it’s wonderful that people here on campus, around the state and beyond will have the opportunity to share and reflect on those memories at the university to which he devoted so much.”

Simpson will lie in honor at the Wyoming State Capitol in Cheyenne, with public access Thursday, March 27, from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. and Friday, March 28, from 7 a.m.-2 p.m., concluding with a family prayer service.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 31, at Christ Episcopal Church in Cody. As seating at Christ Church is limited, the family appreciates those who are willing to monitor the service from an overflow venue.

The Cody memorial service will be broadcast live at the Coe Auditorium in the Buffalo Bill Center of the West, 720 Sheridan Ave., and the Wynona Thompson Auditorium, 1225 10th St. Additional venues may be announced later, with details posted by the Center of the West to its social media channels.

A public reception and free open house at the Center of the West will follow the Cody memorial service March 31.

“Dad never met a stranger and never forgot a face or a name,” says Bill Simpson, Al and Ann Simpson’s eldest son. “So, it feels right to celebrate his memory with as many friends as possible. Our family is very appreciative of the many people and organizations making arrangements for events across the state to honor Dad and commemorate his wonderful legacy.”

“We are honored to join the Simpson family in welcoming everyone in the community to the center for a reception where they can share their many happy memories of Al and his amazing life,” says Rebecca West, the Center’s CEO and executive director.

The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Center of the West, Spirit Mountain Hospice House and the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation.

Additional details about Simpson’s life and career can be found at the Center of the West website. Details about his connection with UW can be found here.
