The University of Wyoming’s Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources has selected Maggie Bourque as the 2025 Haub Fellow at Ucross. This distinguished residency supports work at the intersection of the environment, creativity and place-based inquiry.

Bourque, a teacher and scholar whose work explores the relationships between people and the places they inhabit, will use her time at Ucross to advance her emerging book project, “Being Here Now: Place-based Practices to Deepen Relationships with Ourselves, Our Planet and One Another.” Her work blends ecological observation with humanistic and artistic methods to explore both internal and external landscapes.

“I am so grateful for the opportunity to extend my place-based practices immersed in such a unique landscape,” Bourque says. “It’s an honor to represent the Haub School and connect with the luminary artists and creators at Ucross.”

The project draws on a wide range of interdisciplinary methods, including naturalist observation, phenology, autoethnography, rhetorical analysis, qualitative coding and improvisation. Creative documentation techniques include nature journaling, poetry, field sketches, photography, visual art, collage and reflective essays. Bourque’s goal is to refine and record a series of guided practices designed to cultivate deeper connections between people and the natural world.

Each year, Haub Fellows at Ucross are selected through a competitive application process open to faculty, students and affiliates of the Haub School whose work engages with environmental themes. Applications are reviewed by a committee for their originality, clarity of purpose and alignment with the Haub School’s mission and the Ucross Foundation’s support for creative and scholarly excellence.

Located in the foothills of Wyoming’s Bighorn Mountains, Ucross offers a unique setting for reflection and collaboration among artists and scholars. The Haub School-Ucross Fellowship continues to support innovative, place-based work that bridges environmental understanding with artistic and academic exploration.
