UW Professor Publishes Spanish-Language Adaptation of MLA Handbook

Conxita Domènech, a professor of modern and classical languages at the University of Wyoming, has published a Spanish-language adaptation of one of the most widely used academic writing guides in the world.

The book, titled “Manual MLA: Novena edición adaptada al español,” was released in late April and represents 13 years of research, translation and adaptation. The book was co-written by Andrés Lema-Hincapié, a professor of modern languages at the University of Colorado-Denver.

Generations of writers have relied on the “MLA Handbook,” published by the Modern Language Association, for guidance on writing and source documentation.

Domènech’s new adaptation brings that resource to Spanish-language writers around the globe, providing a comprehensive and culturally relevant guide for students, teachers, researchers, editors, librarians and professionals in many fields.

The “Manual MLA” offers clear, consistent rules for crafting effective prose, evaluating sources, formatting research papers and accurately citing materials.

Unique to this edition are in-depth considerations for the Spanish language, including grammar, punctuation, capitalization, spelling and number usage; guidelines for in-text citations, footnotes and endnotes, and the list of works cited; rules for quoting, paraphrasing, summarizing and avoiding plagiarism; and Spanish-specific issues such as styling surnames, capitalization norms and the placement of punctuation in relation to quotation marks.

The book includes hundreds of new examples in Spanish, including citations for books, journal articles, websites, films and television shows.

Domènech has been a professor in the UW Department of Modern and Classical Languages for 13 years. Her research interests include Catalan and Castilian theater from the Baroque period. Her current project examines the representation of the Catalan Secession War in Castilian and Catalan plays and pamphlets.
