In connection with an exhibition that takes a humorous and critical look at the history
and culture of outdoorsmanship in the U.S., the University of Wyoming Art Museum is
selling the exhibition catalogue of “Bad Outdoorsmen” artists Katie Hargrave and Meredith
Laura Lynn.
The “Bad Outdoorsmen” catalogue, included in Hyperallergic’s “10 Art Books to Bring to the Beach This Summer” for 2025, documents the creation of the artists’ video series of the same name.
Fans of the survival competition series “Alone,” Hargrave and Lynn poke fun at the show, mimicking the do-it-yourself, first-person narrative style while dressed in custom ghillie suits. In the film installation “Bad Outdoorsmen (Episode 1),” the artists traverse through Wyoming to identify the specific rock formations depicted in a William Henry Jackson photograph of Flaming Gorge.
Hargrave and Lynn’s artwork is grounded in their shared interest in the outdoors. They explore the cultures surrounding and mitigating people’s experiences of public lands, which are an important part of the U.S. identity. While Hargrave and Lynn infuse their artworks with humor, beneath all the “poking fun” at the history and culture of outdoorsmanship in the U.S. lies their deep and abiding love for these spaces. The artists work together to engage with contemporary culture and art historical legacies to create new narratives about who public lands are for and how people might experience them.
“Bad Outdoorsmen” is available for purchase at the UW Art Museum Store, located at the visitor services desk near the museum’s entrance. Episodes of “Bad Outdoorsmen” and other artworks by Hargrave and Lynn are now on view at the museum, part of the larger exhibition “Sympoiesis: Co-Creating Sense of Place.” Hargrave and Lynn’s works will be on view through Dec. 20.
The UW Art Museum exhibits, preserves and interprets visual culture from around the world to engage academic, local, state, national and global communities. The museum is located in the Centennial Complex at 2111 E. Willett Drive in Laramie. Hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
