Crisman Named AVP and Dean of Students at UW

A seasoned student affairs administrator and educator has been named the University of Wyoming’s associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students.

Tyler Crisman, who most recently served as assistant dean for student life with Semester at Sea and previously led residential education at the University of San Diego (USD), will join UW Monday, July 28.

“I’m very pleased to welcome Dr. Crisman to the University of Wyoming,” says Nycole Courtney, interim vice president for student affairs. “He brings to this role more than two decades of experience in student engagement, residential life, conduct administration and learning community development. His commitment to inclusive excellence, student success and educational innovation aligns well with UW’s values and our land-grant mission.”

Crisman brings a broad range of leadership experience from a variety of institutions across the country. Most recently, he served two global voyages with Semester at Sea as assistant dean for student life, providing oversight for crisis response, student conduct, learning programs and community engagement aboard a floating international campus. Before that, he served as director of residential education and co-director of living-learning communities at USD, where he led a 3,100-bed system, developed inclusive programming and shaped first- and second-year student experiences in alignment with academic goals.

Earlier in his career, Crisman held progressively responsible roles in housing, conduct and student leadership at Arizona State University (ASU) and New York University (NYU), including serving as director of student conduct and overseeing a nationally recognized residential college program.

In addition to his administrative roles, Crisman has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in higher education, leadership and student development at several institutions, including USD, ASU and NYU. His scholarly interests include residential learning models, equity in student services and restorative practices in conduct administration.

Crisman earned a Doctor of Education in higher and postsecondary education administration from NYU, where his dissertation focused on the impact of residential college programs on student academic success and persistence. He also holds a Master of Science in student affairs in higher education from Colorado State University and a Bachelor of Arts in journalism and mass communication from the University of Northern Colorado.
