John Koprowski, the dean of the University of Wyoming’s Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources and a Wyoming Excellence Chair, has been inducted as a Fellow of the Linnean Society of London.

The society was founded in 1788 and is the oldest learned society devoted to the science of natural history. It honors Karl von Linne (Carolus Linneaus), who undertook the effort to categorize and enumerate the diversity of life through the application a system of Latin names known as binomial nomenclature -- for example, Odocoileus hemionus, the scientific name for mule deer.

The society is a not-for-profit organization focused on delivering the charitable objectives of science, heritage and education through its activities, events and publications.

Koprowski’s induction honors his lifelong commitment to wildlife science, conservation leadership and education. He has mentored 62 graduate students and produced more than 260 publications, including six books on wildlife conservation, during his more than 30 years as a faculty member, including since 2020 at UW.

“I am honored to be inducted as a fellow of the Linnean Society, which recognizes the hard work of my graduate students and colleagues as we have tried to make a difference in wildlife conservation at home and around the world,” Koprowski says. “It was a thrill to attend the ceremony in London’s Burlington House near Piccadilly Circus and sign the membership book that the likes of Charles Darwin, Thomas Huxley and David Attenborough have signed in the past.”

Koprowski also is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, The Wildlife Society and the Explorers Club.

Becoming a Linnean Society Fellow requires nomination by at least one Fellow and election by a minimum of two-thirds of those electors voting. Following the election, new Fellows are formally admitted in person at a meeting of the society on or near the May 24 birthday of Karl von Linne.

Koprowski’s induction further amplifies the Haub School’s impact and reach, reflecting UW’s broader commitment to global engagement and excellence.
