Danielle “Nellie” Bruns, an associate professor in the University of Wyoming’s Department of Zoology and Physiology, has been selected as a President’s Distinguished Scholar.

Bruns is an internationally recognized cardiac researcher with a focus on understanding mechanisms of heart disease, including the impact of age and sex on the failing heart, exercise as medicine for heart failure and identification of new therapies for the treatment of heart disease.

Since joining UW in 2018, she has published extensively in leading journals such as the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology, Aging Cell and the Journal of Applied Physiology, with numerous manuscripts in advanced stages of review. Her work is supported by multiple prestigious grants as principal investigator (PI) and co-PI from agencies including the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association.

In addition to her scholarly contributions, Bruns is a dedicated mentor and educator. She has advised dozens of undergraduate and graduate students, many of whom have earned competitive fellowships, presented at national conferences and received research awards. She serves on the faculty of UW’s WWAMI Medical Education Program, leads the Cardiac Aging Lab, and has earned honors such as the UW Early Career Graduate Faculty Mentor Award and multiple national early-career research accolades.

“Dr. Bruns is an exceptional scientist, educator and mentor whose work is advancing our understanding of cardiovascular health,” says UW President Ed Seidel. “Her groundbreaking research, collaborative spirit and dedication to student success exemplify the very best of the University of Wyoming, and I am proud to recognize her as a President’s Distinguished Scholar.”

The President’s Distinguished Scholars Program honors faculty members who demonstrate exceptional promise in scholarship. Bruns’ three-year appointment includes a monetary award to support continued excellence in her field of study.
