John Koprowski, the University of Wyoming’s Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources dean and a Wyoming Excellence Chair, has been elected president of the American Society of Mammalogists (ASM).
The organization, which celebrated its 106th anniversary this year, is the world’s oldest dedicated to the study of mammals, focused on delivering science and supporting education through its web resources, events and publications.
ASM produces a flagship journal, the Journal of Mammalogy, and the review journal, Mammalian Species, in addition to the Mammal Image Library and the Mammal Diversity Database that serve as leading resources for the public and scientists alike.
“I am honored to serve the membership and provide leadership to the American Society of Mammalogists -- an organization that has been so generous in the support of students and early-career professionals who are committed to the study and management of mammals, not just in the U.S. but around the world,” Koprowski says.
Elected by a majority of voters in the Society of 2,400 professional members, he served as president-elect for two years and took the gavel at the end of the July meeting at Purdue University. He will lead ASM for the next two years as the 54th president of the organization.
Koprowski is “extremely proud” to be the first faculty member from UW to serve in the role and to “represent a long history of past and exceptional current UW faculty who have advanced our knowledge and management of mammals.”
His election follows a lifelong devotion to research and education in mammal conservation and management that includes 59 graduate students mentored on mammals, 250 peer-reviewed publications on mammals and five books on mammal management and conservation.
Koprowski has been dean of the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources since October 2020 after more than 28 years on the faculty at the University of Arizona and Willamette University. As a professor, he has taught courses on mammal conservation, mammal management and marine mammalogy.
Koprowski is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, The Wildlife Society, the Linnean Society of London and the Explorers Club.
