UW’s SER Offers Online Workforce Development Course for Students and Working Professionals
Published August 04, 2025
The University of Wyoming School of Energy Resources (SER) is offering a new, one-credit online workforce development course designed to equip students and working professionals with essential skills and insights for the rapidly evolving U.S. energy industry.
Offered via Zoom, this flexible course is available to both degree- and non-degree-seeking individuals, providing a vital resource for career advancement and industry understanding.
The course will be led by Madison Mankin, an assistant research professional in SER’s Energy Engagement, Leadership and Careers (ELC) program and the Center for Economic Geology Research.
Additionally, the program will feature instruction from experienced energy professionals, including accredited landmen and attorneys. These industry leaders will guide participants through a curriculum specifically designed to connect theoretical concepts with practical workforce applications within the U.S. energy industry.
“We are very excited to be offering this course and address some of the challenges and innovations shaping the future energy workforce,” Mankin says. “As our state actively champions the growth of vital new industries such as critical mineral and rare earth element extraction, advanced nuclear and beyond, it’s paramount that we cultivate a skilled and adaptable workforce. The intentional blend of professional and student perspectives will provide a unique and enriching dimension, bridging the gap between current industry practice and future innovation.”
This initiative comes at a critical time for Wyoming, where the energy sector is undergoing significant transformation. Workforce development is a paramount concern, with a strong emphasis on retaining the state’s talented workforce; fostering new job creation for future generations; and attracting external talent to stimulate economic diversity and job growth. SER’s new course directly addresses these needs, aiming to bridge skill gaps and prepare individuals for the industry’s future.
“This course provides the foundational understanding and practical connections necessary to empower both current and aspiring professionals and contribute to economic resilience in the state,” says SER Academic Director Kami Danaei. “This one-credit workforce development course is more than just an educational offering; it’s a strategic investment in Wyoming’s future.”
Enrollment is open for the course, and interested individuals are encouraged to sign up before Friday, Aug. 15. Current students can register through the WyoWeb portal. Non-degree-seeking students must submit a short admissions application to UW to gain access to the registration portal.
