The University of Wyoming Art Museum has opened the Gerald and Joyce Lang Print Study
Room, a new space dedicated to research and engagement with the museum’s extensive
print collection.
The Print Study Room is now open to classes, researchers and the public during museum
hours.
Made possible through the generosity of Gerald and Joyce Lang, the Print Study Room
transforms a former studio classroom into a state-of-the-art facility that combines
open storage, exhibition space and an educational laboratory. Featuring flat file
cabinets with glass-top displays and rotating selections from the museum’s print collection
of over 5,000 works, the room invites visitors to experience original works of art
up close.
The founding collection of the Print Study Room includes works by artist Paul Binnie
(Scottish, born 1967), whose woodblock prints blend traditional Japanese ukiyo-e techniques
with contemporary themes. The Langs began collecting Binnie’s work in 2012, adding
to their growing collection of Japanese and Japanese-inspired woodblock prints, which
they are donating to the Art Museum. The museum currently has 17 Binnie prints and
will continue to grow this collection for years to come through the generosity of
the Langs.
Beyond secure storage and exhibition space, the Print Study Room offers special opportunities
for hands-on learning. Students and researchers can closely examine original artworks,
develop skills in evidence-based interpretation and gain the opportunity to curate
their own exhibitions. The space also supports specialized lessons on curation, collections
management and art historical methodology, serving as a hub for collaborative research
and discovery.
