Rebecca Stokes

Rebecca Stokes, a research scientist at the United States Geological Survey’s (USGS) Energy and Mineral Science Center, will be the first featured speaker in the University of Wyoming School of Energy Resources’ (SER) Distinguished Speaker Series Monday, Sept. 15.

Stokes will speak from noon-1 p.m. in the UW Energy Innovation Center’s Encana Auditorium. The free lunch presentation is open to all students, members of the campus community and the public.

Stokes earned her B.S. in geology from Texas A&M University, followed by an M.S. and Ph.D. from Indiana University. She then served as a postdoctoral associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Material Science and Engineering Department before working at Chevron as a research mineralogist on the rock characterization team.

Joining the USGS in 2020, Stokes’ principal research interests include mechanisms of organic matter maturation in unconventional reservoirs and graphite characterization as it relates to energy technologies.

Her presentation will discuss the role of graphite in the changing energy landscape from a mineral perspective.

“We are thrilled to launch our fall distinguished speaker series with Ms. Stokes,” says Christine Reed, outreach director at SER. “Her deep expertise in the field of minerals and graphite is particularly timely and relevant to our work, and her presentation is an excellent way to kick off what promises to be a fantastic lineup of speakers for the rest of the series."
