UW’s SER and College of Engineering to Celebrate Energy Day Oct. 9-11
Published October 03, 2025
The University of Wyoming School of Energy Resources (SER) and the College of Engineering
and Physical Sciences will celebrate the 12th annual Energy Day -- in partnership
with Wyoming Sports Properties -- at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, when the Cowboys take
on San Jose State University at War Memorial Stadium.
To recognize Wyoming’s energy sector and to share some of the accomplishments in energy
education, research and development at UW, SER and the College of
Engineering and Physical Sciences will host engagement opportunities and events beginning
Thursday, Oct. 9.
Kicking off the weekend’s festivities, SER will host a lunchtime Energy Career Panel
featuring SER and engineering alumni working in the energy industry, along with current
students, Thursday, Oct. 9. The free public presentation will begin at noon in the
Energy Innovation Center, followed by a networking reception at 1 p.m.
Activities will resume Friday, Oct. 10, with SER’s Distinguished Speaker Series presentation
featuring Matt Babcock, chief commercial officer at Navajo Transitional Energy Company,
discussing the company’s innovative advancements and strategic collaborations. The
free lunchtime event also will take place in the Energy Innovation Center and highlight
a meaningful gift from the company to SER, supporting efforts to strengthen and diversify
Wyoming’s energy industry.
Following the presentation, attendees are invited to view collaborative carbon engineering
and visualization projects at SER stemming from industry investment in an open house.
The evening will culminate with the grand opening of the Multidisciplinary Advanced
Stimulation Laboratory located in the new Science Initiative Building at 5 p.m. A
partnership between SER and the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, the
multidisciplinary lab is dedicated to optimizing the primary recovery of oil and gas.
Research capabilities within the lab span much of the value chain of oil and gas production,
including detailed reservoir characterization, petrophysics, geomechanics and stimulation,
and fluid flow. It also is equipped with the capabilities to conduct enhanced oil
recovery research, as well as a high-resolution scanning X-ray Fluorescence microscope
to identify and determine the spatial relationship of critical minerals in rocks.
The brief ceremony will feature leadership from both the college and SER, as well
as the option to tour the new lab with faculty and researchers from both entities.
A joint reception in the Science Initiative Building atrium will follow until 7 p.m.
All events are free and open to the public, though online registration for the evening
reception is required here.
“The grand opening of the Multidisciplinary Advanced Stimulation Lab marks a significant
milestone in collaboration between SER and the College of Engineering and Physical
Sciences,” says SER Executive Director Holly Krutka. “This new facility, combined
with joint activities like Energy Day, perfectly encapsulates how we celebrate not
only exciting new ventures in innovation, but also the strong existing partnerships
and key successes driving Wyoming’s energy industry forward.”
Game day activities include a tailgate hosted by the UW student chapter of Energy
Resources on Pete’s Party Lawn at the south entrance of War Memorial Stadium. The
students will host a raffle to help fund the club. Proceeds will support experiential
learning opportunities for students in the energy resource management and development
degree program, which include visits to industry sites and professional networking
events.
Before the football game, the public also is invited to visit with energy vendors
from around the state at booths in the Indoor Practice Facility. SER and the college
each will host a booth with giveaways and information on the cutting-edge research
projects conducted at UW, as well as information about each school’s academic programs.
