The University of Wyoming Early Care and Education Center (ECEC) is marking 20 years in its current facility while continuing its long-standing role as a fully enrolled early childhood program serving UW families and the Laramie community.

The center currently supports 87 children from about 70 families, most of whom are UW faculty and staff members.

The ECEC enrolls children across age groups, including eight infants, 20 toddlers, 45 preschoolers and 14 school-age children. The center has operated at full enrollment since the building opened in 2005, reflecting consistent demand for high-quality early childhood education and care in the community.

In addition to serving families, the ECEC provides hands-on learning opportunities for UW students preparing for careers in education and related fields. Each semester, the center hosts about 45 practicum and observation placements in courses such as EDEC 1020, 3220 and 3000, as well as child development and early childhood internships. Nearly 50 UW students also work part time at the center, gaining day-to-day classroom experience.

Over the past three years, the ECEC has strengthened its programming through successful fundraising efforts, surpassing its cumulative Giving Day goal and raising nearly $50,000. These funds have supported improvements to the outdoor learning environment, including new playground features that promote physical activity, exploration and creative play.

“UW ECEC proudly continues to serve the Laramie community. Our current building was constructed 20 years ago and, during this time, we have been honored to provide a space where children can thrive during their crucial developmental years,” says Natalie Enevoldson, the center’s director. “Our teachers and staff are dedicated to creating the best learning environments while nurturing the relationships we build with our families and the broader UW community. Additionally, we recognize our responsibility to support UW students on their journey to becoming the future leaders in early childhood education. Through observations and practicum placements, we ensure that our practicum students gain valuable experience that helps them grow as future educators.”

The ECEC recently hosted a homecoming celebration recognizing families, staff and students, highlighting the community connections that define the center’s mission. As the building reaches its 20-year milestone, the center remains committed to supporting children’s development, serving UW families and preparing students for the early childhood education workforce.
