Critically acclaimed soprano Rosana Lamosa and dynamic pianist Theresa Bogard will showcase the rich heritage of Brazilian classical music in a special recital Saturday, Jan. 31, at 3 p.m. in the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts recital hall at the University of Wyoming.

The recital is free and open to all.

The program features a captivating collection of works by 20th-century Brazilian composers Claudio Santoro and Heitor Villa-Lobos.

The evening will begin with a cycle of songs by Santoro, one of Brazil’s most versatile and influential musical figures. The song cycles featured will be “Canções de Amor” (“Love Songs”) and “Três Canções Populares” (“Three Popular Songs”), which will highlight Santoro’s sophisticated and emotionally resonant style and versatility.

The recital will continue with a selection of works by the internationally celebrated Heitor Villa-Lobos, a composer famous for blending European techniques with Brazil’s traditional folk music. The program includes pieces from his “Modinhas Series 2,” a captivating nod to Brazilian popular song, and culminates with pieces from “Floresta do Amazonas,” including the sublime “Melodia Sentimental,” a hallmark of Villa-Lobos’s unique fusion of Brazilian folk music and classical forms.

Praised for her powerful and expressive voice, Lamosa is one of Brazil’s most important sopranos, whose repertoire spans from opera classics to works by Brazilian composers who include Villa-Lobos and Santoro. Lamosa has graced stages worldwide and received many prestigious awards, including the Carlos Gomes Prize and the Order of the Ipiranga at the rank of Commandress.

A renowned Steinway Artist, Fulbright Scholar and a prize-winner at the International Mozart Fortepiano Competition, UW Department of Music faculty member Bogard is a dynamic pianist with deep admiration for Brazilian composers.
