J.T. Cattelan
A dedicated, talented, hard-working, innovative and creative marketer for the University
of Wyoming’s College of Business, J.T. Cattelan has been named UW’s Staff Employee
of the Fourth Quarter.
Cattelan, the marketing manager for the College of Business Dean’s Office, will be
honored during a public reception -- hosted by Staff Senate and the President’s Office
-- Tuesday, Feb. 24, from 10:30 a.m.-noon in the Peter M. and Paula Green Johnson
Student Success Center commons.
“Not only does he provide top-shelf support; his talent is second to none. During
Saddle Up, he spent personal time creating a game for students to play,” a nominator
says of Cattelan. “His knowledge and attention to detail allow our publications and
electronic displays to be the envy of campus. One night during the summer, near 10
p.m. and during a thunderstorm, he left his home to take photos of lightning above
the college for use in a publication. He is humble to the point of being embarrassed
when complimented.”
The award, which recognizes a UW staff member’s effort toward excellence in the workplace,
was established in March 1985 as the Employee of the Month Award. In January 1990,
it was revised and became the Staff Employee of the Quarter Award. One current UW
staff member is recognized each calendar quarter. The staff employee of the year will
be named during the Staff Senate’s Recognition Day this spring.
“(Cattelan) is a master creative for the College of Business. He has developed projects
such as the NCAA March Madness interactive student bracket, employer partner interactive
boards and all marketing for student-centered events,” a nominator says. “He regularly
drops his own priorities to help colleagues in need.”
“(Cattelan) consistently goes above and beyond in the work he completes,” says another
nominator. “The quality of his work rivals that of highly paid private-sector specialists.
His marketing communication skills and graphic design capabilities are exceptional,
and we are fortunate to have him at UW.”
As marketing manager, Cattelan’s duties are wide ranging -- one of the things he enjoys
most about his role. His work includes building webpages; taking photos and videos;
designing posters; running social media campaigns; writing stories; and, on occasion,
programming such as small video games for students.
“I get to be involved in almost every corner of the college, and promoting the college is something I genuinely love doing,” he says.
“Marketing can be a tough field when people don’t believe in what they’re promoting,
but I’m the opposite. I wake up every day happy to do this work because I fully believe
in the value we provide to students and to our community. My job is to find clear
ways to communicate that value to students and stakeholders in the state and around
the world.”
Cattelan feels fortunate to have grown up in Wyoming and now work at the university,
he says. He’s proud to come from a small Wyoming town and Kemmerer High School, where
teachers and coaches pushed him and helped him grow, which continued in college. He
attended UW largely without debt because of opportunities from his community, such
as the John L. Kemmerer Scholarship. These experiences are why he cares so much about
the work he does.
“I loved my experience as a student here, and when the chance came to return, I didn’t
hesitate,” he says. “I want the next generation to feel the same support I had.”
Cattelan is “extremely grateful” for the recognition, saying he can’t help feeling
it belongs to the entire team. Much of his work comes from listening to the incredible
team at the College of Business, whether that’s entry-level staff, deans or student
workers -- the creative process is very collaborative. People bring smart, occasionally
wild ideas to the table, Cattelan says, and his job is to find the best way to tell
the college’s story.
“We challenge and support each other, and we take pride in doing good work,” Cattelan
says. “If there’s any recognition here, it speaks to the environment we’ve built as
a team more than anything I’ve done alone. As a big football fan, it feels a bit like
a running back trying to take credit without acknowledging the offensive line.”
An Employee of the Quarter nominee can be any UW staff employee, and each must receive
three nomination forms from three separate individuals. Nominations must be submitted
to the Staff Senate office. Forms can be found here.
