Cyrus Western

Cyrus Western, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 8 administrator, will speak to students at the University of Wyoming School of Energy Resources (SER) Tuesday, March 3.

Western will speak in the Advanced Energy Law class, which will take place in the Encana Auditorium at the Energy Innovation Center from 2:45-4 p.m. Additional UW students, faculty and staff are invited to attend.

Western’s appearance is part of a larger visit by Region 8 representatives to engage with faculty, administrators and students at the university and provide insight into career opportunities at the agency.

“With a high priority placed on experiential learning for UW students, the opportunity to interface directly with a federal agency that plays such an integral part in energy development is significant,” says SER Acting Executive Director Scott Quillinan. “To also have the opportunity for students to learn about possible career paths is unique. It’s about more than just education; it’s about providing the real-world connections that transform a degree into a career.”

The open session will begin with a presentation by Tara Hubner, an environmental scientist for the EPA, who will speak about the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Her presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer session hosted by Western.

“It’s an honor to speak with students at the University of Wyoming about the vital role that universities, government and industry play working side by side with researchers and state leaders to turn science into practical solutions,” Western says. “Wyoming sits at the center of America’s energy landscape, and it’s critical that we equip the next generation of leaders with practical insight into how these policies are shaped and implemented. I look forward to engaging with students and sharing more about the important career opportunities at Region 8.”

Through additional coordination with UW’s Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources and the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, the visit will include private departmental meetings and class appearances, providing a unique platform for the UW community to showcase relevant campus initiatives and for students to engage in high-level career discussions with Region 8 officials.

Students unable to attend the open session can meet with EPA staff during office hours Monday, March 2, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. in Room 202 of the Wyoming Union.
