A gift to the University of Wyoming has established the “Do Good, Be Good” Seeton Family Community Impact Fund specifically to support the top community-serving students at UW who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to community service.

This fund will encourage sustained, individualized leadership in service activities and honor outstanding contributors who make a lasting impact.

The fund has been established by Tom Seeton, who graduated from UW in 1979 with a B.A. in journalism and later returned to UW to earn a B.S. in business administration in 1983. Seeton was active in student media, serving as sports editor and news editor of the Branding Iron and editor of the Summer Roundup, the weekly summer school newspaper. During his junior year, he was awarded the prestigious Wyoming Press Association scholarship for journalistic excellence and won two Rocky Mountain Press Association awards for sports news and column writing. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

The Service, Leadership and Community Engagement (SLCE) Office at UW is seeking nominations for the inaugural “Do Good, Be Good” award recipient to be named later this semester. Nominees should be current UW students who have shown consistent engagement in community service initiatives at UW and/or in Laramie over an extended period, reflecting their genuine commitment to helping others -- as well as demonstrated leadership in organizing, managing or contributing to impactful service projects that address societal needs and inspire others to take action.

Seeton worked as a sports editor for daily newspapers in New Mexico, Wyoming (Rawlins) and Arizona before embarking on an exciting career with Continental Airlines and later co-managing his family's oil and gas business, Mary Helen Energy LLC.

Seeton is involved in several initiatives that enrich the university community, including being a staunch supporter of the Pokes Food Pantry. His philanthropic contributions to UW include the establishment in 2023 of two Seeton Family “Cowboy Tough” scholarships, which celebrate student-athletes who overcome significant medical challenges, injury, disability or family hardship to make their mark in UW sports. He and his wife, Cheri, live in Golden, Colo.

Seeton’s vision for the “Do Good, Be Good” Seeton Family Community Impact Fund reflects his belief in the transformative power of self-driven community service and leadership, a passion that was deeply inspired by his many years of involvement in community service projects through his Kiwanis clubs in Denver. He aims to foster a culture of sustained, individualized impact at UW, encouraging students to make meaningful contributions to society.

“We know that many of our students are dedicated to making a positive difference in the world, whether that is here in Laramie or across the globe, so we look forward to highlighting the exemplary work of one of those students each year,” says Wyoming Union Assistant Director for Community Engagement Richard Raridon. “Many thanks to Tom, Cheri and the entire Seeton family for joining with us to make this award possible.”

Those interested in submitting nominations or learning more about the award can do so at www.uwyo.edu/csil/community-engagement-and-service/slce/service/do-good-be-good-award.html. All are welcome to submit nominations, including self-nominations, and the deadline is Monday, March 23.
