The University of Wyoming recently was accepted as a member of the University-Industry Demonstration Partnership (UIDP), a select global association of leading research universities and innovative companies dedicated to advancing university-industry collaboration.

Complementing the steps the university has taken to bolster its interactions with industry, such as establishing the Office of Industry and Strategic Partnerships in January 2024, UIDP membership will enhance UW’s connection of academic expertise with business needs and economic development.

UIDP membership is by invitation and is reserved for organizations with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in research, innovation and partnership. UW joins a distinguished network of top-tier universities and companies working together to address strategic and tactical issues impacting university-industry relations -- and to develop innovative approaches for maximizing the benefits of cross-sector collaboration.

As an institutional member, the university’s faculty and staff have access to UIDP’s extensive resources, including conferences, webinars, collaborative projects and a repository of practical knowledge designed to support research leadership, contracting, technology commercialization, workforce development and more. Membership enables all UW employees to participate in UIDP activities and leverage opportunities for professional development and networking.

UIDP’s mission aligns closely with the university’s commitment to fostering innovation; supporting economic development; and preparing the next generation of leaders through impactful partnerships with industry. Any new-to-UIDP colleagues may register their work email for access here.

“I am excited that UW was recently accepted as a member of the UIDP,” says Parag Chitnis, UW’s vice president for research and economic development. “The University of Wyoming’s Research and Economic Development Division is actively working to strengthen and expand interactions with industry partners to advance innovation, technology transfer and workforce development through our units like the Technology Transfer Office and Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Becoming a part of UIDP brings new ideas and connections for our division to foster collaborative research; support commercialization of university discoveries; streamline engagement pathways for private-sector partners; and translate academic expertise into real-world solutions. These efforts connect UW researchers with industry needs, attract external investment and accelerate the deployment of new technologies.”

UW’s expanding research enterprise -- as evidenced by its Carnegie R1 status and increasing research expenditures -- positions the university as an attractive partner for innovation and commercialization activities.

Beyond internal structures, UW participates in collaborative initiatives such as state and industry partnerships in energy research and applied pilot projects, further strengthening ties that advance technological development and economic growth. These efforts reflect a strategic emphasis on leveraging university resources to support industry needs, enhance workforce readiness and contribute to regional prosperity.

The Office of Industry and Strategic Partnerships plays a leading role in the rollout of UIDP on campus. The office is a dedicated unit designed to foster meaningful collaborations between the university and companies at local, national and international levels, aligning research, experiential learning and workforce development with industry priorities.
