Amira/Avizo Software Now Available for Campus Use Through COIFPM-Thermo Fisher Scientific Partnership
Published April 16, 2026
As part of the ongoing research partnership between the University of Wyoming’s Center
of Innovation for Flow through Porous Media (COIFPM) and Thermo Fisher Scientific,
the company’s premier imaging software applications -- Amira and Avizo -- are now
accessible for academic and research use at UW and community colleges statewide at
no cost to the user.
Amira and Avizo are powerful 3D visualization and analysis platforms designed to support
research, teaching and data exploration across a wide range of scientific disciplines.
These tools allow users to visualize complex datasets, perform segmentation and analysis,
and extract meaningful insights from 2D and 3D images, simulations and experimental
data. The platforms are especially well-suited for projects analyzing organic and
inorganic samples, fluids, biological samples and environmental systems.
Key capabilities of Amira/Avizo are:
-- 3D reconstruction of volumetric datasets.
-- Imaging and quantifying characteristics of heterogeneous samples.
-- Quantitative pore-scale analysis.
-- Image segmentation and feature tracking.
-- Material characterization and particle analysis.
-- Visualization of time-series data for dynamic processes.
-- Simulation preparation through meshing and modeling workflows.
The two platforms offer overlapping functionality. However, Amira is optimized for
life sciences and biomedical applications, while Avizo is geared toward material science,
geosciences and industrial imaging.
Amira and Avizo software enable transformative workflows for researchers and educators
working in diverse fields such as geosciences, energy, biology, materials science
and engineering.
Users can reconstruct high-resolution 3D images from CT or SEM scans; perform pore-scale
and structural analysis; simulate material behavior; and visualize complex biological
or geological systems. These tools will support innovative research, curriculum development
and student training across Wyoming’s higher education institutions.
These licenses are available now and will remain active for the duration of the COIFPM-Thermo
Fisher Scientific partnership, currently projected to continue through Oct. 31, 2034.
To use the software, follow the guidelines found through the UWIT Knowledge Base at
Setting up Amira/Avizo Software.
A three-day training program on Avizo software is scheduled Tuesday-Thursday, April
28-30, with sessions held daily from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 12:30-3:30 p.m. A separate
training program on Amira software will be offered in the fall.
The Avizo sessions are designed to be progressive, with each session building on the
previous one rather than repeating content. Training will include demonstrations of
core features and common workflows. Participants are encouraged to attend all sessions
to gain the full benefit of the program. However, all sessions will be recorded and
made available for future reference for those who are unable to attend or who miss
a portion of the training.
To register for the Avizo training, complete the registration form at Register for Avizo Software Training.
