A woman smiles

Barbara “Bunny” Logan

Barbara “Bunny” Logan, assistant professor of history at the University of Wyoming, brings history to life in the classroom through a dynamic teaching style that students consistently describe as engaging and entertaining.

Those accolades, among many others, have resulted in Logan being named one of 10 recipients of the 2026 John P. Ellbogen Meritorious Classroom Teaching Award at UW. The award was established in 1977 by businessman John P. “Jack” Ellbogen to “foster, encourage and reward excellence in classroom teaching at UW.”

Throughout the past two years, Logan has taught “Early Medieval Europe,” “The Greco-Roman World,” “History of Money,” “World History to 1500,” “Ancient Egypt,” “History of the Medieval City,” “Medieval Religious Dissent,” “The Renaissance” and “Imperial China.”

For the fall 2027 semester, she’ll teach “The Roman Empire” and the “Italian Renaissance” in Rome for UW’s study-abroad program.

“You can tell that Dr. Logan is very passionate about everything concerning the Middle Ages, which makes coming to class very exciting,” one student wrote. “Dr. Logan is always willing to meet for office hours and truly wants all students to succeed in her courses. I would absolutely recommend taking this class to other students and, if presented with more opportunities, will continue to take classes that she offers.”

One of Logan’s graduate students, Reagan Paris, attributes her success as a scholar to Logan.

“What has stood out to me the most … is her willingness to go above and beyond to shape me into the best scholar I can become,” Paris wrote. “At one point last year, I had asked for a meeting and felt like I had been asking too much of my adviser, to which Dr. Logan responded that she felt that it was her place as an adviser to pay forward the kindness her mentors had shown to her in the past. From that day on, my understanding of mentoring in academia was changed, convincing me that mentoring is just as important as the work we produce as scholars.”

“Dr. Logan’s class is fascinating, engaging and a good deal of fun,” another undergraduate student wrote. “She engages the students in the discussion, treats us with respect and puts in a lot of effort to immerse us in the subject matter and the great works of art presented in her course.”

Melissa Morris, an assistant professor of history at UW, says Logan is “among the best instructors not just in our department, but at the University of Wyoming.”

Logan also is the chapter historian for the Alpha chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at UW.

She earned a Ph.D. in late antiquity studies from the University of California-Santa Cruz and a bachelor’s degree in psychology and English from Queens College, N.Y.
