Protecting and Preserving Memories of Loved Ones Topic of Wyoming Dementia Together Program Sept. 9
Published September 08, 2026
Keeping alive the cherished memories of a loved one living with dementia is one of
the many challenges facing caregivers, and it can seem overwhelming. The next program
from Wyoming Dementia Together (WDT) will offer help in this area, featuring discussion
about the value of retaining memories, putting together a therapeutic life review
and the importance of storytelling.
The program, titled “Legacy Leaving: Listening with Heart and Purpose,” will be presented
through Zoom Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 10:30 a.m. Carol Taylor, a licensed clinical social
worker from Jackson who specializes in geriatric social work, will facilitate this
program.
According to Taylor, the key is to hear a loved ones’ stories and hold on to what
matters most.
“Our loved ones have lived long, rich, purposeful lives,” she says. “It’s up to those
of us closest to them to keep alive their memory and their impact on our lives. We
will be discussing the many techniques we can use to capture, record and write the
story of the life of a loved one.”
WDT, which offers support services to those caring for someone living with Alzheimer’s
or other forms of dementia, operates under the direction of the University of Wyoming
Center on Aging (WyCOA). The group provides virtual informational programs every other
Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.
Programs feature guest speakers and allow time for interaction from those who attend
online. WDT support staff members include dementia care professionals, licensed clinical
social workers, physical and occupational therapists, and caregivers themselves.
Caregivers from throughout Wyoming and surrounding states have benefited.
“Outstanding messages for us. Thank you,” one caregiver says about a recent program.
Future WDT program topics will feature “Aging Brain Care: From Evaluation to Emerging
Treatment Options,” Sept. 23; “Managing Finances in Dementia Care: Support for Caregivers
and Loved Ones,” Oct. 7; and “Living Well with Dementia: Using Technology to Stay
Active and Connected,” Oct. 21.
