The University of Wyoming Art Museum invites the public to join visiting artist Wanxin Zhang for a series of special programs Thursday-Saturday, Sept. 17-19, exploring his work and creative process.

The free programs include an artist talk, informal gallery tour and hands-on ceramic sculpture workshop led by Zhang. All programs will take place at the Art Museum.

Zhang is known for his sculptural works that explore cultural identity, history, migration and contemporary life. During his visit to the UW Art Museum, he will share insight into his artistic practice and creative process while engaging with the community through conversation and hands-on learning.

The series begins Thursday with a reception and artist talk, “My Journey From Manchuria to California,” where Zhang will discuss his work, influences and evolution as an artist. The program offers an opportunity for attendees to hear directly from the artist and engage in conversation about his creative practice. The free event begins at 5:30 p.m. and is part of the Art Museum’s ongoing Third Thursdays series, which brings the community together each month for art, conversation and creative experiences.

Friday at noon, join the artist for a Lunchtime Conversation in the galleries, offering visitors an opportunity to engage directly with the artist’s work in “Exhibition Collection: Contemporary Works” and learn more about his creative process in an informal setting. Guests are welcome to bring a sack lunch to the museum to enjoy after the talk and continue the conversation. This event is free and open to the public.

From 1-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Zhang will lead an intensive, hands-on sculpture workshop. Following a demonstration from the artist, participants will begin with an idea-sketching exercise before translating their ideas into clay. With guidance from Zhang throughout the process, participants will develop a single abstract or figurative sculpture. The workshop will conclude with a group critique and is open to participants of all experience levels.

The sculpture workshop is limited in capacity and requires registration. More information and registration are available at www.uwyo.edu/artmuseum.
