UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Former Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss, who died in 2013, was featured in a WyoFile piece titled “Lakers icon Jerry Buss grew up in Kemmerer. But the town’s done little to honor its famous son.” Buss graduated from UW in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science degree and received an honorary doctorate in 2005.

Cowboy State Daily included comments from Scott Quillinan, senior director of research in UW’s School of Energy Resources (SER), in an article focusing on the state’s investment of $2.5 million to work with university researchers to help industry officials develop methods to tap into 200 million barrels of oil reserves in the Powder River Basin’s Mowry Shale.

UW and the Wyoming State Veterinary Lab are key partners in the Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s Mule Deer Monitoring Project, which provides valuable information on winter mortality and movement. UW researchers are processing all of the data from collars, in collaboration with the department’s science, research and analytical support unit. Buckrail published a similar article.

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed UW Associate Professor Temple Stoellinger, a Wyoming Excellence Chair, about the Endangered Species Act and some of the needs for more reform within the law. Stoellinger was among experts who talked about the act that was passed into law 50 years ago.

Sixteen university libraries in Colorado and Wyoming, including UW, are collaborating to address critical issues in academic publishing that are creating inequities in access to information and raising the cost of academic journal subscriptions beyond what campus budgets can afford. The university libraries are members of the Colorado Alliance of Research Libraries, which is negotiating the renewal of the Elsevier journal package. Kevin Carman, UW’s provost and executive vice president, was quoted in the alliance’s news release. Library Journal’s infoDOCKET published the alliance’s release.

TechXplore published an Idaho National Laboratory (INL) release noting that INL collaborators, including UW researchers, have developed the Meta-Level Framework for assessing critical infrastructure’s resilience, such as its ability to withstand extreme weather. The framework helps utilities, businesses and communities analyze their power infrastructure resilience and make decisions that go beyond the technology itself.

Rural Schools Collaborative (RSC) reported that UW’s College of Education and Teton Science Schools are working toward improving teacher retention through new approaches to preparation and professional development. UW received a $25,000 Catalyst planning grant in 2021 from RSC to launch the Wyoming Rural Teacher Corps. RSC provided a link to a Casper Star-Tribune article that highlighted the initiative.

UW, Western Wyoming Community College and the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services were mentioned in a WyoFile piece as possible leads in workforce training efforts in southwest Wyoming. Five major projects are planned that may require more than 6,000 workers over the next five years.

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed Ashley Hlebinsky, executive director of the Firearms Research Center, housed at UW’s College of Law. The center will create a space where academics can contribute to firearms scholarship.

Carbon capture technology and the Wyoming Integrated Test Center (ITC) at Basin Electric Power Cooperative’s Dry Fork Station were featured in a recent episode of “Wyoming Chronicle” on Wyoming PBS, according to The Gillette News Record. The ITC is under the administrative umbrella of UW’s SER.

The Fence Post published UW’s release featuring the university’s High Altitude Bull Test and Sale. Faculty in UW’s Department of Animal Science partnered with colleagues at the Laramie Research and Extension Center to launch the program earlier this year. The program provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain practical experience in the beef industry.

UW’s release on “The Wyoming Betabeleros’ News: La Pagina Espanol of The Powell Tribune (1927)” exhibition was published by The Powell Tribune. In the 1920s, the newspaper published a special page entirely in Spanish for its Mexican and Mexican American readers, many who were “betabeleros,” sugar beet laborers in the area.

Oil City News and WyoToday Media published UW’s release noting that more than 13,000 pounds of potatoes were donated recently to Food Bank of Wyoming in an annual potato harvest at UW’s James C. Hageman Sustainable Agriculture Research and Extension Center near Lingle.

UW President Ed Seidel recently spoke with Sheridan Media about how the university is responding to mixed enrollment numbers. A primary concern is the 14 percent drop in incoming freshmen from out of state.

CompsMag published UW’s release announcing PokeBot V5.01, a “Pokes doing strange things with technology” event, which was held on campus last week.
