UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Gun rights and domestic violence protections will be at the center of a U.S. Supreme Court hearing this week. UW College of Law Professor George Mocsary, a Second Amendment expert, commented to Reuters that the case involves a range of issues -- from the right to keep and bear arms to overcriminalization, to things in between -- that challenges people’s worldviews.

Rebecca Levine, an assistant research scientist in UW’s Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources, spoke with WyoFile for an article focusing on how cameras on wildlife collars give scientists an intimate view of the natural world. As technology improves, the cameras will help scientists learn more about wildlife in their natural settings.

Sheridan Media spoke with UW President Ed Seidel and others on how UW and the state’s community colleges are moving forward with plans to address declining enrollment numbers in Wyoming’s higher education institutions.

Max Gilbraith, UW’s Harry C. Vaughan Planetarium coordinator, helped explain the dynamics of a meteor that created a rare daytime blue-green fireball over the skies of Dubois and Jackson last week. Gilbraith’s comments were added to a Cowboy State Daily article. Gilbraith also was interviewed by the online news source about the planet Jupiter, which was at its brightest peak of the year last week.

DrillBits, an industry publication, noted that UW’s student chapter of the International Association of Drilling Contractors (IADC) recently hosted two national IADC delegates to the university’s campus. Students had the opportunity to learn about the guests’ respective paths in the oil and gas industry, along with general life lessons and the current state of events within the workforce.

After a lengthy delay, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department is launching a process to protect a migration corridor used by tens of thousands of western Wyoming pronghorn, according to WyoFile. UW scientists’ recently published migration corridor research was mentioned in the article.

Architectural Digest published an article on how to design an ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder)-friendly home. John Vasko, a UW clinical psychology doctoral candidate, provided comments for the piece. The article noted that Cynthia Hartung, a professor in the UW Department of Psychology, is Vasko’s mentor.

Ken Sims, a UW geology and geophysics professor, and UW doctoral student Cole Messa wrote a column on Yellowstone National Park that The Idaho Capital Sun published. The pair noted that geologist and explorer Ferdinand Hayden’s meticulous journal entries proved instrumental in convincing the federal government that the region should be protected.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle published UW’s release noting that the university’s 2023 Giving Day was a success. In just 24 hours, the annual campaign reached almost double the donors of last year and raised $3.6 million that goes directly to students and the faculty and programs that support them.

U.S. Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., ranking member of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, mentioned UW research when he gave remarks at a full committee hearing last week. The hearing examined the opportunities and challenges in deploying carbon capture, utilization and sequestration and direct air capture technologies on federal and nonfederal lands.

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed James Trosper, special adviser to Seidel on Native American affairs, about last week’s “Good Medicine” program that honored UW Native American students for their excellence and accomplishments in education. The event also featured three well-known Native American speakers. Wyoming News Now and WyoToday Media also carried similar posts on their websites.

Improving the communication skills of people who are caregivers for those living with dementia is the topic of the next edition of “Once Again,” the YouTube channel program hosted by UW’s Wyoming Center on Aging. Sheridan Media published UW’s announcement.
