State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:
The CBS News program “60 Minutes” featured Gov. Mark Gordon, who discussed Wyoming’s innovative approach to combat climate change as part of his “all-of-the-above” energy policy. Holly Krutka, executive director of the UW School of Energy Resources (SER), was included in the segment, detailing SER’s research into carbon capture and storage. The Wyoming Energy Authority has recommended that Gordon award UW’s SER $2.75 million for a development project titled “Integration of Produced Water Thermal Desalination and Steam Methane Reforming for Efficient Hydrogen Production.” The recommended award is part of a combined $37.5 million proposal to support six energy projects, including coal-to-hydrogen and carbon capture proposals, according to WyoFile.
UW is among the top 36 colleges in the nation offering the “Best Education Master’s Programs for Your Money” by Money. The programs were based on affordability, employment outcomes and typical graduate earnings. UW also is among the top 50 colleges offering the “Best Engineering Master’s Programs for Your Money” by Money. Money collaborated with College Factual for the inaugural graduate school ranking to “find the country’s top-value programs.”
Cowboy State Daily interviewed UW economist Rob Godby for an article on how Wyoming lawmakers are focusing on property tax reform strategies during the 2024 legislative session. Property taxes across the Cowboy State have risen sharply since the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the article.
UW was among 10 universities selected by Modern Campus for excellence in website design and management. The winners were chosen from about 4,500 higher education websites that use the Modern Campus content management system. They were recognized for their effectiveness at providing students with informative content and engaging user experiences, driving conversions, maintaining interest and improving enrollments. Yahoo! The Powell Tribune reported that Cody Regional Health is collaborating with Cody High School and Heart Mountain Academy as part of the state’s Reimagining and Innovating the Delivery of Education (RIDE) pilot program to help prepare a new generation of health care professionals. Wyoming’s Future of Learning, a collaboration that includes UW’s College of Education, recently announced the selection of nine school districts for the first year of the RIDE pilot program that supports student-centered learning.
UW’s Family Practice Clinic in Casper was featured in a Cowboy State Daily piece. The clinic is home to 24 family practice medicine residents and nine faculty members, who treat a client base of more than 6,000 patients.
The Casper Star-Tribune noted that UW is helping train a relevant workforce with its Wyoming Outdoor Recreation, Tourism and Hospitality Initiative. The program was mentioned in the article that focused on Wyoming’s booming outdoor recreation industry.
UW’s Matt Kauffman, from the Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, was quoted in an NBC Montana piece noting that the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation has allocated $250,000 for mapping Western migration routes for wildlife. The mapping will track migration in elk, mule deer, moose, pronghorn and other wildlife.
Wyoming Public Radio (WPR) interviewed Bryan Bedrosian about a new mapping tool that helps identify and compare critical golden eagle habitats throughout the state. Bedrosian is team leader for the RaptorMapper project, conservation director for Teton Raptor Center and an adjunct senior scientist with UW’s Wyoming Natural Diversity Database.
WPR covered a town-hall meeting recently in Laramie that was part of the first firearms and mental health conference held by UW’s Firearms Research Center (FRC). Ashley Hlebinsky, executive director of the FRC, led the public forum.
UW’s Conxita Domenech and Chelsea Escalante spoke with WPR about their research and their American Heritage Center exhibition on the Mexican “betabeleros,” beet laborers of the 1920s. The Powell Tribune published a special page entirely in Spanish for it Mexican and Mexican American readers, many who were betabeleros.
Two UW student ambassadors recently provided science-based activities and debriefings with students at Paintbrush Elementary School in Gillette, according to The Gillette News Record.
The Wyoming Tribune Eagle published UW’s release announcing that the university has adopted a presidential working group’s statement of principles regarding free expression and will move forward with efforts to implement the group’s recommendations. UW’s release noted that the statement of principles has received support from faculty, staff and student groups.
A new publication by UW’s Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics reports that economic activity related to agricultural production contributed $2.526 billion to Wyoming’s economy in 2021. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle, Farms.com, Cap City News and Buckrail were among media outlets that published UW’s release on the publication.
The WYldlife Fund, the Wyoming Craft Brewers Guild and UW’s Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources have teamed up for the WYLD Showdown. Consumers in breweries across the state can participate in a bracket-style competition via a QR code found on beer coasters to raise awareness and funds that support wildlife conservation, according to a UW release published by Wyo4News and Sheridan Media.
Sheridan Media published UW’s release announcing that the winter commencement ceremony will take place Saturday, Dec. 16. UW will accord degrees to more than 800 students during the ceremony.
Sheridan Media also published UW’s release announcing that Wyoming Dementia Together, a statewide, nonprofit caregiver network operating through UW’s Wyoming Center on Aging, will present “Peace, Love and Joy in the Holiday Season,” a program for caregivers of loved ones living with dementia this week.
UW Extension educators throughout the state were recognized for their service and creativity at a recent UW professional development conference in Laramie. Oil City News published UW’s release.
