State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:
UW is one of 18 institutions nationwide selected to receive a total of $100 million from the National Science Foundation under its inaugural Accelerating Research Translation program to accelerate the pace and scale of translational research that will grow the nation’s economy. UW’s award is for $6 million over four years. The grant will allow for the creation of the Wyoming Translation Research Accelerator. Expected outcomes include an increase in industry collaborations and startups; diversification of the state’s economy; and greater preparedness of graduate students and postdoctoral students to enter industry. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle published UW’s release.
Sean Field, an assistant professor in the UW School of Computing, was part of a team of international scientists completing the first ground-based survey of damage to Ukrainian cultural sites since the Russian invasion. The survey was led by two University of Notre Dame faculty members, who noted that the intent by the Russians is essentially to obliterate Ukraine’s culture, heritage and history, according to a Notre Dame News media release. Science Magazine published the university’s release.
WyoFile reported that the projections of eight biologists from Wyoming and the region, including UW Professor Brant Schumaker, paint a picture of shrinking, chronic wasting disease-riddled elk herds if the state continues to feed elk. The eight experts contributed to a recent U.S. Geological Survey report, which the Wyoming Game and Fish Department will use as it completes its first-ever elk feedground management plan.
Jayce Crockett and Dariana Thomas, both Alliance, Ohio, high school seniors, discussed with The Alliance Review their experiences during last summer’s Black 14 Social Justice Summer Institute held on the UW campus. The two are related to Lionel Grimes, one of the UW Black 14 football players. Grimes and 13 of his teammates were dismissed from the Cowboys team by Coach Lloyd Eaton in 1969.
WalletHub interviewed Virginia Vincenti, a professor emeritus in the UW Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, about elder abuse, including how to protect the elderly from financial abuse.
Melanie Armstrong, UW Ruckelshaus Institute director, will moderate a Forest Plan Symposium panel next month for the Bridger-Teton National Forest. Buckrail reported that simultaneous meetings are scheduled in Jackson, Afton, Kemmerer and Pinedale.
Cowboy State Daily interviewed Max Gilbraith, coordinator for UW’s Harry C. Vaughan Planetarium, about the Geminid meteor shower that peaked last week in the state. The article noted that, at the meteor shower’s peak, observers can spot an average of 120 meteors an hour.
UW’s statement of principles regarding free expression and constructive dialogue was recently approved by faculty, staff and student organizations, along with the administration. Wyoming Public Radio (WPR) interviewed Martha McCaughey, an adjunct professor in the UW Department of Criminal Justice and Sociology, who co-chaired the working group that drafted the policy. University Business published WPR’s article that noted UW will stay politically neutral as it seeks to foster an environment where both freedom of expression and constructive dialogue can flourish.
UW’s Malcolm Wallop Civic Engagement Program recently collaborated with the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation to make the organization’s multimedia resources available to Wyoming K-12 social studies and English language arts teachers. The Powell Tribune and The Cody Enterprise published UW’s release.
The Wyoming Small Business Development Center Network at UW has been selected by the U.S. Small Business Administration to administer a two-year statewide Cybersecurity for Small Business Pilot Program. No-cost training and resources are available for Wyoming small-business owners to better protect themselves from online scams and hackers. Sheridan Media published UW’s announcement.
The Pine Bluffs Post published UW’s release noting that several UW Extension educators recently received state and national honors from professional associations in their respective disciplines.
Scholarship applications are now available for the Chief Washakie Memorial Endowment for the 2024-25 academic year at UW. The Lander Journal published UW’s announcement.
