    UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Randy Haas, a UW assistant professor of anthropology, was among anthropologists who discovered -- through analysis of 1,179 projectile points in the Andes mountains -- that the rise of archery technology in that mountain range dates to around 5,000 years ago. Previous research held that archery in that region emerged around 3,000 years ago, according to Ancient Origins. The anthropologists’ research was recently published in Quaternary International.

The Casper Star-Tribune published an article on how UW is helping address a rural teacher shortage in the state through the Wyoming Rural Teacher Corps. It was launched last year under the direction of Jenna Shim, interim dean of the UW College of Education.

UW and Wyoming Game and Fish Department scientists, the past two years, have been researching if carnivores and scavengers could help reduce chronic wasting disease (CWD) in the state. WyoFile reports that researchers are feeding four captive bobcats meat infected with CWD to see if infectious prions are detected in the bobcats’ waste. Early results indicate that the percentage is low.

Deseret News published an article titled “How clean energy collides with the environment -- namely birds,” and how a new mapping program can be used by utility companies to assess risk in initial project planning to avoid costly eagle fatalities. The Wyoming Natural Diversity Database at UW and other entities created the “RaptorMapping” program.

UW and University of Colorado Boulder faculty members recently backed measures asserting their commitment to prioritize specific values in negotiations with major publishers. The actions are intended to publicly align the values of the library with the faculty and bolster both institutions’ positions in renegotiating contracts with academic publishers, according to Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition.

CoinMarket Cap published an article noting that UW alumna Caitlin Long is among “7 Iconic Women of Digital Industry For 2024,” citing the “visionary women who are pioneering the charge in the widespread adoption of crypto within institutional frameworks.”

Frontier Carbon Solutions received three Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality permits to drill three deep wells west of Green River, representing the first permits issued for carbon capture in the state, according to SweetwaterNOW. UW’s School of Energy Resources is part of the Sweetwater Carbon Storage Hub.

The Basin Republican Rustler noted that UW Extension educator Melissa Cook and a local therapist are planning presentations in three Big Horn County communities later this month that cover essential topics to ensure safety, well-being and happiness this winter.

UW’s “What Does it Mean to be a Cowboy?” video, which highlights students from various academic fields, answers that question. Laramie Live and K2 Radio published an article and the video on their websites.

Reason noted that the Duke Center for Firearms Law and UW’s Firearms Research Center are collaborating on the sixth annual Firearms Law Works-in-Progress Conference in May at the Duke University School of Law in Durham, N.C.

Sheridan Media and Wyo 4News published UW’s release noting that the GrowinG Internship Program is now accepting applications for 2024. The UW Extension program provides a $5,000 stipend for a 10-week work experience, which is made possible by funding through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Beginning Farmers and Ranchers grant.

Range Club members from Sheridan College and Northwest College competed with UW members at a conference last month, according to The Sheridan Press. At the conference, held on the UW campus, students also attended presentations from researchers, producers and professionals about poisonous plants, livestock guardian animals, virtual fencing and agency updates.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle profiled hometown hero Frank “The Tank” Crum, a UW graduate student from Laramie, who was preparing for his final football game -- the Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl -- for the Wyoming Cowboys Dec. 30, which the Pokes won 16-15 over the University of Toledo. Crum’s father, Gary, and grandfather, Earl, also played for the Pokes.
