    UW in the News

    State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

    The Casper Star-Tribune reported that UW will begin its Wyoming Gas Injection Initiative, a public-private $50 million partnership that aims to bring the latest enhanced oil recovery research from the laboratory to the oil field. Mohammad Piri, director of UW’s Center of Innovation for Flow through Porous Media, leads the latest research.

    A study is being conducted in partnership with UW’s Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources, the Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit and the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory as to why a sharp decline in mule deer herds in Wyoming has happened and to identify potential solutions. Sheridan Media noted that the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission initiated the study.

    UW is among three institutions that will receive funding for projects that will support humanities-driven science, technology, engineering and mathematics to facilitate interdisciplinary student training and technology development, according to a release from the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management. In all, 19 projects will share $17.4 million to support novel, early-stage research at 17 U.S. colleges and universities.

    Holly Krutka, executive director of UW’s School of Energy Resources (SER), spoke with Cowboy State Daily for an article focusing on funding a novel process to convert coal to asphalt. The state, along with Peabody Energy Corp., is considering funding millions of dollars to the project at the Wyoming Innovation Center in Campbell County. SER manages the center.

    Diverse: Issues in Higher Education reported that UW was among nine of the 82 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) institutions that competed in bowl games this season that had a higher graduation success rate for Black football student-athletes than white football student-athletes. Data is from The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport’s “Keeping Score When It Counts: Assessing the Academic Records of the 2023-24 Bowl-Bound College Football Teams.” Academic progress at FBS schools continues, according to the report.

    Julie Andersen Hill, currently vice dean and Alton C. and Cecile Cunningham Craig Professor of Law at the University of Alabama, is the new UW College of Law dean. Sheridan Media published UW’s release noting that Hill will begin her new leadership role at UW June 28.

    In a Gillette News Record energy roundup forecast article, underground carbon storage projects around the state were mentioned, including the Dry Fork Station in Campbell County, the Sweetwater Carbon Storage Hub and the Echo Springs projects. All are DOE-funded CarbonSAFE initiatives administered in cooperation with UW’s SER.

    Cowboy State Daily interviewed UW College of Law Professor George Mocsary for an article focusing on the description of assault rifles and how the term “assault rifle” is misused. Mocsary -- a nationally recognized Second Amendment expert -- is director of UW’s Firearms Research Center.

    Tailor Morris, a UW Extension Cent$ible Nutrition Program educator, discussed with The News Letter Journal the Grow a Little Extra program in Campbell and Crook counties. Citizens donated about 300 pounds of fresh produce that were distributed throughout the two counties.

    The Wyoming Tribune Eagle published UW’s release announcing that Wyoming’s collaborative Statewide Longitudinal Education Data System initiative has released the first Post Secondary Education Workforce Outcomes in Wyoming Dashboard. It displays the Wyoming employment rate and annual salary information for graduates of Wyoming’s community colleges and UW.

    Rodney Wambeam, a UW senior research scientist, was quoted for an article that focused on prevention science in schools that can help guide decisions about which programs and curricula to choose. Understanding its limitations is key for success, according to The Lund Report.

    Jackson Hole Radio reported that Melanie Armstrong, UW Ruckelshaus Institute director, will moderate a panel discussion in Jackson today (Tuesday) focusing on national forest planning.

    The Mellon Foundation will provide $850,000 to UW’s Department of English for a three-year project to gather and archive stories of everyday Wyoming residents. The News Letter Journal published UW’s release noting that the project supports the English department’s plans to launch a Ph.D. program in the public humanities this fall. Wyoming News Now had a similar story.

    UW Extension will offer eight private pesticide applicator education programs at various locations in northeast Wyoming from Jan. 25 through March 14. County 17 and Oil City News published UW Extension’s release. County 17 also published another UW Extension release that offered tips for Wyoming renters looking to better understand their rights and responsibilities.
