    UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

UW’s School of Energy Resources was recently awarded $2.7 million for a pilot project that tackles large quantities of water produced by oil and gas wells. The project -- among six from the Wyoming Energy Authority that will receive matching funds -- was approved by Gov. Mark Gordon, Wyoming News Now reported.

Connor Novotny, a project coordinator for UW’s Restorative Justice office, talked with Wyoming Public Media about the program’s work. Restorative justice is a set of practices and philosophy that reframes how “we address and respond to harm while building community.”

The Laramie Boomerang reported that UW has recently formed the Office of Industry and Strategic Partnerships, a collaborative venture between UW’s Research and Economic Development Division and the UW Foundation to establish alliances between academia and industry that will foster innovation and economic impact throughout the state and beyond.

Montana State University reported that it will receive at least $10 million from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to establish a regional partnership to help communities and tribal nations in six states address environment- and energy-related priorities. UW Extension is among five such offices that will receive funding to help “connect the knowledge and leadership in Region 8 communities with resources to empower local solutions.”

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle published UW’s release announcing that members of the public will learn about the university’s collaborations with Laramie County Community College during a “UW in Your Community” event later this month in Cheyenne.

George Mocsary, a professor in the UW College of Law and founder of the Firearms Research Center, was recently double featured in a Just the News article that focused on New York’s pressuring of banks and insurance companies to not do business with the National Rifle Association and the litigation stemming from that pressure. The article linked and quoted a recent amicus brief co-written by Mocsary, filed with the U.S. Supreme Court. It also included an embedded link to an X (formerly Twitter) post featuring his latest law review article on the subject of New York’s pressure on these companies.

Greg Nickerson, Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit associate research scientist at UW, was interviewed by Mountain Journal about the documentary “Animal Trails: Rediscovering Grand Teton Migrations,” produced by the Wyoming Migration Initiative at UW. The online publication is a nonprofit, public-interest journalism organization covering the wildlife and wild lands of greater Yellowstone.

Scott Schell, a UW Extension entomologist, commented in a Cowboy State Daily how the recent below-zero weather did not kill Wyoming’s pine beetles. The article noted that Wyoming will probably never get a strong enough cold streak to eradicate the infestation of the destructive insects.

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reported that the Veterans Project, a program of short films that showcases the creative endeavors of servicemen and women that provides a unique insight into their meaningful service experiences, will be shown at UW later this month.

UW Extension will offer eight private pesticide applicator education programs at various locations in northeast Wyoming from January through March. The Sundance Times published UW’s release noting that private applicator licenses are required for anyone who applies or supervises the application of restricted-use pesticides.
