    UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

A Casper Star-Tribune article included comments from Jonathan Naughton, director of UW’s Wind Energy Research Center, for a piece titled “Wind is waning across the U.S. What does it mean for Wyoming?” Wind energy production across the U.S., including in Wyoming, declined in 2023 -- for the first time in years.

The Jackson Hole News & Guide interviewed UW’s Kevin Monteith, a Wyoming Excellence Chair, for an article detailing how new data indicates how bighorn sheep in the Gros Ventre area are expected to flourish this spring. The article noted how last year’s severe winter decimated wildlife herds in Jackson Hole.

Research by a Cold-Air outbreak Experiment in the Sub-Arctic Region (CAESAR) team is investigating arctic phenomena associated with the sudden formation of intense “polar lows” that are known to lead to hazardous conditions at sea. Bart Geerts, a UW professor of atmospheric science and a CAESAR principal investigator, was quoted in a Debrief article.

Emily Grant, a UW senior research scientist for the Wyoming Survey and Analysis Center, spoke with Wyoming Public Radio for an article on the recent “Indigenous Victims of Homicide and Missing Persons in Wyoming” report. The story mentioned that homicide rates have slightly decreased since 2019, but homicide rates for Indigenous people are still five times higher than they are for white people in the state.

FarmProgress and The Powell Tribune noted the research of Resham Thapa, a UW School of Energy Resources research professional 1, who published an article assessing the effects of coal char as a soil amendment in Agronomy, a top-tier journal in the fields of agronomy and crop science.

Appearing before the Carbon County Commission, UW Extension educator Abby Perry discussed the Carbon County Parks Challenge, a program to get people excited to visit the 25 parks located across the county. According to Bigfoot99 Radio, Perry plans to have a sign with details about the local area installed in each park.

The Powell Tribune reported that Cody High School and Heart Mountain Academy recently launched the second cohort of students into the Health Career Pathways program, a collaborative initiative between Cody Regional Health and the state’s Reimagining and Innovating the Delivery of Education (RIDE) pilot program. Wyoming’s Future of Learning, a collaboration that includes UW’s College of Education, recently announced the selection of nine school districts for the first year of the RIDE pilot program that supports student-centered learning.

UW’s College of Agriculture, Life Sciences and Natural Resources will facilitate a third session in its Ranch Management and Agricultural Leadership seminar series next month at Northwest College. Tri-State Livestock News published UW’s announcement.

County 17 and Goshen County News Now published UW’s release noting that UW Extension will host a one-day conference on season extension and small-scale food production at Sheridan College next month. The conference, which is supported by the Wyoming Department of Agriculture’s Specialty Crop Program, is part of UW Extension’s Harvest Wyoming initiative.

Jennifer Faulkner will serve as a local foods coordinator in the UW Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics for UW Extension. Oil City News published UW’s announcement that noted Faulkner has experience with agriculture and a passion for local foods that she will bring to the position.

The Thermopolis Independent Record and High Plains Journal published UW’s release noting that high school and middle school students are encouraged to participate in a virtual career night March 19. The annual event, organized by UW Extension, connects young people with professionals in fields ranging from agriculture, firefighting and wildlife management to video production, tourism and exercise physiology.
