UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Bradley Rettler, a UW philosophy associate professor, was quoted in an article published by Forbes titled “Winklevoss $4.5 Million Investment Highlights Bitcoin CheatCode Power.” The article reported on the recent CheatCode conference in Bedford, England, that aimed to educate attendees on bitcoin’s role as a transformative tool in business, finance and technology.

Jenna Shim, the John P. “Jack” Ellbogen Dean of the UW College of Education, told “The Yonder Report” that many high school career and technical education (CTE) programs in Wyoming are closing because they cannot find enough CTE teachers. “The Yonder Report,” a podcast that covers rural America, is a joint production of Public News Service and The Daily Yonder.

Ali Nejadmalayeri, UW’s John A. Guthrie Endowed Chair in Banking and Financial Services, provided comments for MoneyGeek articles on the best zero percent annual percentage rate credit cards and home equity loans. MoneyGeek interviewed Sherrill Shaffer, a UW College of Business professor emeritus, for a piece titled “Best Secured Credit Cards in 2024.”

UW students recently traveled to Bluffton University in Bluffton, Ohio, to launch weather balloons as part of the Nationwide Eclipse Ballooning Project. UW researcher Philip Bergmaier told Cleveland’s Fox 8 News that the students’ research could help with future weather forecasting and further the study of eclipses.

Kevin Monteith, a UW professor and Wyoming Excellence Chair, was a guest on the podcast “Rokcast.” He discussed mule deer research that he and members of his shop are conducting.

The Riverton Ranger printed a list of local missing people as part of an article titled “Data on missing people revealed.” The article noted that the Wyoming Missing and Murdered Indigenous People Task Force recently released its 2023 report. As a result of the work of the task force, which was informed by UW’s Wyoming Survey and Analysis Center’s analysis, the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation created a missing person database. The newspaper will print local missing person cases each week.

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed Bryan Shuman, a professor in the UW Department of Geology and Geophysics, and Jeff French, an associate professor in the UW Department of Atmospheric Science, for an article that focused on cloud seeding.

Fred McLaughlin, director of UW’s Center for Economic Geology Research, told Montana Free Press that Bureau of Land Management (BLM) offices in Wyoming have fielded three carbon sequestration proposals. He said he anticipates there will be a leasing fee associated with the use of BLM-managed pore space, the empty space in the ground between sediment particles and in air bubbles trapped inside rocks. His comments were part of an article titled “Putting a price on ‘pore space.’”

Sheridan Media noted that three educators from Sheridan County are part of the third cohort of UW’s Wyoming Teacher-Mentor Corps.

UW-led research shows that the length of time that Yellowstone Lake is covered by ice each year has not changed in the past century, despite warming temperatures in the region. Newsweek, Phys.org and Earth.com published UW’s release on the study.

The Casper Star-Tribune used UW’s release on the bitcoin halving for an article titled “Bitcoin to halve: ‘Some interesting things are going to be happening.’”

Sheridan Media and The Sheridan Press published UW’s release announcing that Corrine Knapp, an associate professor in UW’s Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources, has been selected as the inaugural Haub Fellow at Ucross.
