UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Dow, the state of Wyoming and UW are collaborating to launch the Wyoming Gas Injection Initiative (WGII), a program designed to enhance oil well productivity and recovery from existing fields and wells in Wyoming. World Oil published a Dow news release noting that WGII will provide field pilot testing of advanced oil recovery methods. The state will provide $25 million in matching funds through UW’s Center of Innovation for Flow Through Porous Media to assist the oil and gas operators selected for the projects in Wyoming.

Wyoming Public Radio featured honors student Anastasiia Pereverten, from Ukraine, who recently graduated from UW. She worked with UW’s Honors College to open a local showing of the “Unissued Diplomas” exhibition. The display, located on the first floor of the Laramie Civic Center, honors the memories of Ukrainian students who will never graduate because their lives were taken by the Russian invasion.

Art and Catherine Nicholas, Wyoming ranchers and investors who own Wagonhound Land & Livestock near Douglas, recently donated a $2.5 million gift to UW that will empower the university’s Ranch Management and Agricultural Leadership Program. Publishing UW’s announcement were The Douglas Budget, Northern Ag Network and Wyoming News Now. The gift, matched by the state’s $2.5 million contribution, will lead to impactful change and will support future leaders in ranch management and agriculture statewide.

In partnership with UW, a tourism dashboard is being developed that measures and reports the impacts of tourism on the Jackson community. Buckrail published an article that focused on how the Jackson Hole Travel & Tourism Board benefits the community, the economy and the area’s natural resources.

Wyoming News Now featured Wyoming Indian High School student Eliana Underwood, who plans to major in engineering at UW this fall. Underwood created compact 3D printed medical tools that could be used in a space-grade first-aid kit. Her project was part of the school’s NASA HUNCH (high school students united with NASA to create hardware) program. NASA helps fund student projects across the U.S.

Jason Shogren, the Stroock Chair of Natural Resource Conservation and Management at UW, was interviewed by Public News Service about Wyoming’s creative economy. The arts and cultural production sector in Wyoming has shown significant growth the last year, according to data from a U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis report.

The Casper Star-Tribune featured an article on oil field reclamation efforts in the Upper Green River Basin, led by Jonah Energy. The piece noted that Mike Curran, an ecosystem scientist, and UW researchers lead the Jonah Energy-backed reclamation project in Sublette County. The American Society of Reclamation Sciences recently awarded Jonah Energy the Distinction in Reclamation Award, which is considered the highest accolade in the field.

UW’s American Heritage Center (AHC) will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the tragic death of U.S. Sen. Lester Hunt, who took his own life in 1954, amid political blackmail and pressure during the McCarthy era. The Laramie Boomerang published UW’s release that noted that other events also are scheduled.

Oil City News interviewed Paul Flesher, UW AHC director, on the opening of the “Stan Lee, Beyond the Book” exhibition that runs through Nov. 1. The exhibition features one of the most exhaustive collections of Lee’s papers in the world and is the culmination of several decades’ worth of correspondence between the comic book giant and UW.

Yi-Ling Chen, a UW School of Politics, Public Affairs and International Studies associate professor, is among panelists for this week’s Taiwan After the 2024 Elections Annual Conference hosted by Stanford University’s Hoover Institution. Chen will be on the panel to discuss “Prospects for Governance in the New Administration” that will focus on Taiwan’s high housing costs and the impact they are having on generational inequality and economic opportunities.

The Sheridan Press reported that UW Department of Music faculty members will perform at the Neltje Center later this week. The Neltje Center, located south of Sheridan, is used by UW students and faculty members as a space in which to “create and unleash their imagination.”

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle published UW’s release announcing that the university and its partners are collaborating on a regional effort to expand research and innovation to shape the future of carbon management technologies. The Colorado-Wyoming Climate Resilience Engine is a collaborative initiative focused on climate change and sustainability in the Colorado-Wyoming region.

In its list of “The Best War Memorial to Visit in Every State,” History-Computer selected War Memorial Stadium, located on the UW campus. According to the online publication that educates and inspires readers with historical content, War Memorial was originally dedicated to the 30,000 Wyoming veterans who served in World War II. The stadium is now dedicated to all Wyoming veterans, and it is the highest Division 1 stadium in the country at 7,215 feet above sea level.

The Laramie Boomerang featured the first of three May 11 UW commencement ceremonies in the Arena-Auditorium. Keynote speaker was Gaurdia Banister, a 1980 graduate in UW’s Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing. Banister, a psychiatric nurse, is in the process of retiring as executive director of the Institute for Patient Care at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Alliance Grain Co. published UW’s release noting that UW Extension has produced a free digital publication on how producers can identify and treat black grass bug infestations.
