UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

UW, last week, received a transformative gift to its Difference Makers Campaign, paving the way for the revitalization of the west side of War Memorial Stadium and the creation of a new state-of-the-art swimming and diving facility. 7220 Sports and the Wyoming Tribune Eagle published UW’s announcement.

KGAB Radio and the Laramie Boomerang published UW’s news release noting that the university is working with Safran Passenger Innovations and the Laramie Chamber Business Alliance on using artificial intelligence to improve passenger air travel.

The U.S. Department of State reported that UW is among 37 U.S. colleges and universities sharing in nearly $1.3 million in grants funded through the 2024 Increase and Diversify Education Abroad for U.S. Students Program grant competition. The Casper Star-Tribune published a similar article about UW students studying abroad this summer and fall.

UW’s Di Yang, a Wyoming Geographic Information Science Center assistant professor, was among experts quoted in a news report from Fox28, in Spokane, Wash., on a story focusing on how climate misinformation overshadows record floods worldwide. Yang commented on misinformation on cloud seeding.

The Gillette News Record noted that UW’s Center for Air Quality is part of a project seeking to demonstrate a novel methane mitigation technology that would ease compliance with federal methane regulations while harnessing otherwise lost natural gas for onsite energy needs. The Wyoming Energy Authority funds project requests.

UW research was featured in a Popsugar piece titled “Why Do Finance Experts Shame Us For Dining Out? We Asked 5 to Weigh In.” UW Extension Educator Mary Martin’s research shows that people who struggle with their mental health are more likely to have less self-control when it comes to financial decisions.

A Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), in Malaysia, media release noted that UTAR recently hosted a nine-day cultural exchange program for 18 UW students. The program was organized by the Department of Soft Skills Competency at UTAR’s Sungai Long Campus, which provided the UW students with an immersive experience.

Erin Harrington, a UW psychology assistant professor, was among contributors to a research paper that focused on the short-term loneliness associated with physical health problems. ScienceDaily noted that the paper, led by Penn State University researchers, was first published in the journal Health Psychology.

Cowboy State Daily interviewed UW law Professor Jason Robison, a water law expert, for an article focusing on Wyoming’s Green River, which flows into the Colorado River. The Colorado River is at the center of a water rights fight among Western states, especially in drier states such as California and Arizona, which have faced water shortages the last several years.

Andrew Garner, a UW politics, public affairs and international studies professor, was among guests on Wyoming Public Radio’s  “Open Spaces” program “The Road to Cheyenne: The Big Picture.” The program featured Wyoming’s political landscape heading into the primary elections in August

The American Institute for Economic Research featured UW philosophy Associate Professor Bradley Rettler and his two co-authors’ book titled “Resistance Money: A Philosophical Case for Bitcoin.” The book has gained international attention for arguing that bitcoin is a net benefit to the world, despite its imperfections.

UW’s Biodiversity Institute and other entities are sponsoring a citizen science program at the  Wind River Tribal Buffalo Initiative in Fremont County, WyoToday Media reported.

Northern Ag Network interviewed UW Extension Educator Dagan Montgomery, in Sublette County, about pesky horn flies that pose a significant threat to the well-being of herds across the region and can cause costly economic damage.
