State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:
The Wyoming Center on Aging (WyCOA) at UW has received a $5 million grant from the federal government to educate and train health care workers and caregivers to better work with the aging population. The Casper Star-Tribune noted that WyCOA is partnering with different medical groups and organizations to provide training across the state. Christine McKibbin, the center’s director, provided comments for the article.
Discover magazine interviewed Silvia Sanchez-Martinez, a senior research scientist in the UW Department of Molecular Biology, about how tardigrades may help unlock slowing the aging process in humans. Sanchez-Martinez, who works in UW Associate Professor Thomas Boothby’s lab, discussed the resilience of tardigrades, which scientists hope will advance human medicines.
UW philosophy Associate Professor Bradley Rettler’s book, “Resistance Money: A Philosophical Case for Bitcoin,” has received positive reviews from Forbes, the American Institute for Economic Research and Blockworks. Rettler and his two co-authors offer a framework for evaluating bitcoin from a global perspective and use it to examine bitcoin’s monetary policy, censorship-resistance, privacy, inclusion and energy use.
Ashley Hlebinsky, executive director of UW’s Firearms Research Center, provided comments for a Reuters article on actor Alec Baldwin, who was on trial for the 2021 fatal shooting of “Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on a New Mexico movie set. U.S. News & World Report and other media outlets around the world published similar articles.
Oil City News added comments from UW’s Tara Righetti, a law professor and Occidental Chair in Energy and Environmental Policies, and energy economist Rob Godby for an article that focused on how a larger nuclear industry will impact state residents.
UW’s School of Energy Resources -- in partnership with the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences -- is establishing the Center of Excellence in Subsurface Energy and Digital Innovation. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle published UW’s release noting that the center is dedicated to innovative research and finding solutions to energy development challenges in Wyoming.
KTVQ, a television station in Billings, Mont., reported that Ellen Aikens, a UW School of Computing and Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources assistant professor, is among scientists studying golden eagles in the Big Horn Basin. Scientists are fitting young golden eagles with satellite transmitters to find out how the raptors live and are challenged by new threats.
Teton County Weed and Pest is partnering with UW’s Biodiversity Institute to survey and study Wyoming’s tick population. Cowboy State Daily interviewed Brett Addis, associate director of the Biodiversity Institute, about the project and how volunteers are needed to collect ticks.
The Scientific Journal and ScienceDaily published UW’s release noting that a new analysis by UW researchers examines the impacts of current federal economic incentives on large-scale, blue hydrogen production technologies and estimates the expected outcomes in long-term expenses as those hydrogen production pathways evolve. UW Professor Haibo Zhai led the research.
UW Extension recently released a new podcast dedicated to sharing agriculture and natural resources information, titled “From the Cowboy State.” According to a UW media release, published by The Wyoming Tribune Eagle, each episode is an interview with other UW Extension agriculture and natural resources educators from across the state.
The Cheyenne Post published UW’s release announcing that the Powell Research and Extension Center will host a field day Thursday to share results from UW crop research.
The Sheridan Press noted that UW’s Board of Trustees will meet this week at the university’s Neltje Center for Excellence in Creativity and the Arts in Sheridan County.
