UW in the News

State, national and international media frequently feature the University of Wyoming and members of its community in stories. Here is a summary of some of the recent coverage:

Bradley Rettler, a UW associate professor of philosophy, and four colleagues wrote an opinion piece titled “Bitcoin Can Protect Freedom and Help Win Elections.” Newsweek published the piece.

Although pronghorn populations in Wyoming have been largely stable, a new analysis shows that many herds are experiencing long-term declines in fawn production. The declines are primarily a result of oil and gas development and encroachment of trees. Inside Climate News reported on the study by a group of researchers from four universities and the Northern Plains Agricultural Research Laboratory. Jeff Beck, a co-author of the study and a professor in the UW Department of Ecosystem Science and Management, provided comments for the article.

An Engineering News-Record article featured UW’s campus housing project that involves construction of two new residence halls and a new dining facility to enhance the student experience.

Public News Service interviewed Sam Kalen, a UW law professor, for an article that focused on how the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals is soon expected to decide a Wyoming case between hunters and landowners that could affect public land access.

A Strategic Management Society article noted that Cameron Borgholthaus, an assistant professor in the UW Department of Management and Marketing, was part of a research team that studied how CEO narcissism is connected to corporate risk-taking, specifically through the board of director discussion tone around risk-taking during board meetings. Borgholthaus provided comments for the article.

Cowboy State Daily reported on a study by personal consumer website WalletHub that shows Wyomingites pay more on their energy bills than anyone else in the U.S. UW energy economist Rob Godby was interviewed for the article.

Cindy Price Schultz, head of the UW Department of Communication and Journalism, has been studying the economic factors behind Wyoming’s declining news environment. She spoke with Wyoming Public Radio about her findings.

Wyoming Public Radio reported on UW botany Professor Daniel Laughlin’s research that found trees can sustain life in temperatures higher or lower than where they are currently growing.

Wyoming Public Radio interviewed UW economist Anne Alexander for an article titled “Wyoming among top ten states that pay lowest wages but changes may be more complicated than numbers suggest.”

Andrew Garner, a UW political science professor, provided comments for a Wyoming Public Radio article that focused on a rising trend of political candidates who decline to participate in debates or forums.

UW hosted the 38th annual VisCom Conference in Saratoga last month. The Saratoga Sun reported that scholars and professors from UW and other universities shared their work and ideals on social, political, cultural and sexual issues through visual communication.

The Jackson Hole News & Guide previewed UW’s WYOBIRD’s (Wyoming Bird Initiative for Resilience and Diversity) outreach day at the UW-National Park Service Research Station in Grand Teton National Park. Last Saturday’s events included bird tours, educational activities and research talks.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Megan Degenfelder and the Wyoming Department of Education have launched the 307 Principal Leadership Academy in collaboration with UW’s College of Education. The academy will provide support and training for principals in the early years of their career, which will improve education leadership statewide. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle published the Wyoming Department of Education’s news release.

After the UW Harry C. Vaughan Planetarium closed for three weeks due to technical issues, the venue has reopened and has resumed its July schedule. The planetarium will close again from Aug. 5-14 to install its new 4K laser projectors. The Laramie Boomerang published UW’s release.

WyoToday Media published UW’s release announcing Wyoming Dementia Together’s (WDT) schedule of programs through December. WDT is a statewide nonprofit caregiver network offered through UW’s Wyoming Center on Aging.
